Characters & Backstories
Sekiro's world is populated by a cast of characters with intertwined backstories that drive the narrative. Understanding these characters is key to navigating the game's complex plot and achieving different endings.
- Sekiro: The protagonist, a young man taken as an apprentice by "The Owl" for Shinobi Training. He awakens in the Dilapidated Temple with a Shinobi Prosthetic after his arm is severed by Genichiro Ashina.
- The Owl: Sekiro's master and trainer in Shinobi arts.
- Lord Genichiro Ashina: The first boss encountered, he attacks with powerful "Perilous Attacks." He severs Sekiro's arm and captures Kuro. He is Isshin Ashina's adoptive grandson and seeks to use Kuro's blood to create an immortal army.
- Kuro, the Divine Heir: The only surviving descendant of an ancient clan, raised in seclusion as a Shinobi. He is the adoptive son of Ashina’s minister, Hirata, and is captured by Ashina’s forces due to his unique ancestry.
- The Sculptor: A character who carves Buddha statues and replaces Sekiro's severed arm with the Shinobi Prosthetic. He is found in the Dilapidated Temple.
- Isshin Ashina: Kensei and leader of the Ashina Clan. He is on his deathbed during the Interior Ministry's invasion and disapproves of Genichiro's methods.
- Emma: Isshin Ashina's private physician, instructed to warn Wolf and Kuro about Genichiro's plans.
- Hanbei the Undying: An NPC found in the Dilapidated Temple.
- Tengu of Ashina: An NPC wearing a Tengu mask who asks Sekiro to "hunt rats" from Senpou Temple.
- Old Hag: An NPC with an oil lamp found near the Tengu of Ashina, who comments on the never-ending war.
The Dilapidated Temple serves as a central hub where Sekiro can interact with NPCs such as the Sculptor, Hanbei the Undying, and Emma. Other characters and merchants visit the temple as the game progresses.
