Co-op & Multiplayer Strategies

Serious Sam 3: BFE truly shines when you bring friends into the fray. Whether you're tackling the campaign together or duking it out in competitive modes, teamwork and smart play are crucial. This section will arm you with the knowledge to dominate the alien hordes and your fellow players.

Co-op Campaign: Surviving the Onslaught Together

The campaign in co-op is a different beast entirely. While more firepower is always good, increased enemy counts and health pools mean you need to coordinate. Communication is key!

General Co-op Tactics

  • Stick Together (Mostly): While splitting up can sometimes cover more ground, in Serious Sam 3, it often leads to isolated players being overwhelmed. Try to maintain line of sight and cover each other.
  • Designate Roles:
    • Crowd Control: Players with weapons like the Minigun, Cannon, or Rocket Launcher should focus on clearing out swarms of weaker enemies like Kamikazes, Headless Rocketeers, and Gnaar.
    • Heavy Hitters: Players equipped with the Devastator, Laser Gun, or S.P.A.S. Shotgun are ideal for taking down larger threats such as Kleer Skeletons, Werebulls, and Scrapjacks.
    • Sniper/Support: The Sniper Rifle is excellent for picking off distant Arachnoids or Khnum weak points. This player can also call out incoming threats.
  • Resource Management: Ammo and health are shared resources. Don't hog all the Large Health Packs or Rocket Ammo Crates. Communicate who needs what. If one player is low on health, another might sacrifice a bit of their own to ensure the team survives.
  • Revive Priority: If a teammate goes down, prioritize reviving them, especially during intense engagements. Clear immediate threats around them before attempting the revive.

Chapter-Specific Co-op Strategies

a. Summer in Cairo [ch1]

  • Initial Push: In the opening street sections, have one player focus on the ground-level Headless Kamikazes while another takes out the Gnaar emerging from buildings with the Assault Rifle or Double-barreled Shotgun.
  • Courtyard Ambush: When the first major courtyard fills with Kleer Skeletons and Headless Rocketeers, establish a firing line. Use the S.P.A.S. Shotgun for close-range Kleer and the Assault Rifle for distant Rocketeers.

c. Broken Wings [ch3]

  • Rooftop Sniping: During the rooftop sections, utilize the Sniper Rifle (if found) to pick off distant Arachnoids and Headless Rocketeers before they become a major threat. Other cover the immediate area from Kleer and Gnaar.
  • Scrapjack Encounters: When the first Scrapjack appears, focus fire on its weak point (the glowing orb on its back) with high-damage weapons like the Rocket Launcher or Devastator. Have one player kite it while others shoot.

h. The Dark Bride [ch8]

  • Khnum Tactics: The Khnum boss fight requires coordinated movement. One player can draw its attention while others circle around to target its glowing weak points. The Laser Gun is incredibly effective here. Be mindful of the Kamikazes and Kleer that spawn; clear them quickly to avoid distractions.
  • Arena Control: The large arena sections with multiple enemy types demand good positioning. Use cover effectively and ensure no single player gets isolated by a swarm of Werebulls or Headless Rocketeers.

Multiplayer: Dominate the Arena

Serious Sam 3's competitive multiplayer modes are fast, frantic, and demand quick reflexes and map knowledge. Understanding weapon spawns, power-ups, and map layouts is crucial.

General Multiplayer Tips

  • Know Your Maps: Familiarize yourself with weapon and item spawn locations on maps like Courtyards of Death, Little Trouble, and Shotty Trouble. Knowing where the Rocket Launcher or Armor Vest will appear gives you a significant advantage.
  • Weapon Prioritization:
    • Early Game: Focus on securing the S.P.A.S. Shotgun or Assault Rifle for immediate engagements.
    • Mid/Late Game: Prioritize powerful weapons like the Rocket Launcher, Minigun, and Devastator. Control of these weapon spawns often dictates the flow of the match.
  • Power-up Control: The Serious Damage and Invulnerability power-ups are game-changers. Time your runs to grab them as they spawn. A well-timed Invulnerability can turn the tide of a losing fight.
  • Movement is Life: Always be moving. Standing still makes you an easy target for Sniper Rifle shots or Rocket Launcher blasts. Utilize strafing and jumping to make yourself harder to hit.
  • Melee Advantage: Don't underestimate the power of a well-timed melee attack, especially with the Sledgehammer. It can be a one-hit kill on weakened opponents or a quick finisher in close quarters.

Mode-Specific Strategies

Deathmatch

  • Aggressive Item Control: In Deathmatch, it's a race for kills. Be aggressive in securing high-tier weapons and power-ups. Don't be afraid to engage multiple opponents if you have a significant weapon advantage (e.g., Rocket Launcher vs. Pistol).
  • Spawn Trapping (Use with Caution): On smaller maps like Little Trouble, learning spawn points can allow you to quickly re-engage opponents. However, this can also leave you vulnerable to being flanked.

Team Deathmatch

  • Teamwork & Communication: Work with your teammates. Call out enemy positions, coordinate pushes, and cover each other. Two players with Assault Rifles focusing fire are more effective than two lone wolves.
  • Flanking Maneuvers: While one or two teammates draw fire, another can attempt to flank the enemy team, catching them off guard. This is particularly effective on maps with multiple routes, such as Courtyards of Death.

Capture the Flag

  • Offense/Defense Split: Designate players for offense (flag runners) and defense (base protectors).
    • Offense: Fast-moving players with weapons like the S.P.A.S. Shotgun or Assault Rifle are good for flag runs. They should focus on getting in, grabbing the flag, and getting out.
    • Defense: Players with area-denial weapons like the Minigun or Rocket Launcher are excellent for defending your flag. Place them in strategic positions overlooking the flag spawn.
  • Escort the Flag Carrier: Never let your flag carrier go alone. Provide cover and clear a path for them.
