Enemy Types & Strategies
Welcome to the meat grinder, Sam! Serious Sam: The First Encounter throws hordes of bizarre and deadly creatures your way. Understanding each enemy's behavior and knowing the optimal strategy to dispatch them is crucial for survival. This section will detail the most common threats you'll face and how to turn them into bloody gibs.
Basic Grunts & Cannon Fodder
These enemies are often encountered in large numbers and serve to overwhelm you or distract from more dangerous threats. While individually weak, their sheer numbers can quickly deplete your health and ammo if not managed effectively.
- Gnaar (One-Eyed Monster):
- Description: A hulking, one-eyed brute that charges directly at Sam. They come in both green (melee) and red (ranged, spits projectiles) variants.
- Strategy: Keep your distance. The green Gnaar is easily kited with the Pistol or Shotgun. For red Gnaar, prioritize them due to their ranged attack. A single Shotgun blast to the eye (their weak point) is often enough to take them down. In groups, use the Double Shotgun for wider spread or the Minigun to mow them down.
- Key Locations: Abundant in early levels like "Hatshepsut" and "Sand Canyon."
- Headless Kamikaze:
- Description: Iconic headless humanoids with bombs for hands, screaming as they charge. They explode upon reaching Sam or when killed.
- Strategy: Their scream is your warning. Keep them at arm's length and shoot them down before they get close. The Pistol is surprisingly effective for single Kamikazes to conserve ammo. For groups, the Shotgun or Minigun are ideal. Remember, their explosion can damage other enemies, so use it to your advantage in tight corridors.
- Key Locations: A constant threat from "Oasis" onwards, often appearing in massive waves.
- Headless Rocketeer / Headless Machinegunner:
- Description: Humanoid enemies armed with either a rocket launcher or a minigun. They are more durable than Kamikazes and pose a significant ranged threat.
- Strategy: These are high-priority targets. Utilize cover where available. For Rocketeers, strafe constantly to avoid their slow-moving rockets. The Minigun or even the Assault Rifle can quickly dispatch them. Machinegunners lay down suppressive fire; use the Shotgun at close range or precision shots with the Assault Rifle from a distance.
- Key Locations: Frequently encountered in open areas and choke points from "Karnak" onwards.
Mid-Tier Threats
These enemies require more focused attention and often have specific weaknesses or attack patterns you can exploit.
- Kleer Skeleton:
- Description: Fast-moving, bipedal skeletons that charge and slash with their claws. They are agile and can be difficult to hit.
- Strategy: Their speed makes them dangerous in close quarters. The Shotgun is excellent for stopping them in their tracks. For larger groups, lay down a line of Minigun fire or use a well-placed Rocket Launcher shot. They are particularly vulnerable to explosives.
- Key Locations: First appear in "Valley of the Kings" and become a staple enemy throughout the game.
- Arachnoid (Small & Large):
- Description: Spider-like creatures with a mounted plasma cannon. The larger variant also has a devastating melee attack.
- Strategy: Always prioritize Arachnoids. Their plasma shots are fast and deal considerable damage. Strafe continuously to avoid their projectiles. The Rocket Launcher is highly effective against both sizes. For the smaller ones, the Minigun can also work. When facing the large Arachnoid, stay out of melee range at all costs.
- Key Locations: Found in more open, complex levels like "The Great Pyramid" and "Dunes."
- Scorpion (Aludran Reptiloid):
- Description: Large, bipedal reptiles armed with dual plasma cannons. They are heavily armored and have a high rate of fire.
- Strategy: These are tough. The Rocket Launcher is your best friend here. Aim for direct hits. If you're low on rockets, sustained Minigun fire can work, but it will consume a lot of ammo. Always keep moving and use cover to break their line of sight.
- Key Locations: Appear in later levels such as "Thebes: The Lost Tomb" and "City of the Gods."
Heavy Hitters & Bosses
These enemies are designed to be challenging and often require specific weapon choices and tactical movement.
- Sirian Werebull:
- Description: A massive, horned beast that charges relentlessly. They are incredibly fast and deal immense damage on impact.
- Strategy: The key to Werebulls is anticipation and evasion. They charge in a straight line, so strafe sideways at the last second to avoid their attack. Once they pass, unleash your most powerful weapons – the Rocket Launcher, Cannon, or even a well-aimed Shotgun blast to their back. They are vulnerable after a charge.
- Key Locations: Introduced in "Valley of the Kings" and often appear in arenas or open spaces.
- Khnum:
- Description: A gigantic, demonic creature with powerful fire-based attacks and a ground stomp.
- Strategy: Khnums are mini-bosses. Maintain maximum distance. Their fireballs are slow but devastating. The Cannon is the most effective weapon against them, dealing massive damage per shot. If you don't have the Cannon, sustained Rocket Launcher fire is your next best option. Keep circling and firing, avoiding their stomps and fire attacks.
- Key Locations: Encountered in "The Great Pyramid" and "City of the Gods."
- Ugh-Zan III (Final Boss):
- Description: The ultimate antagonist, a colossal, multi-limbed alien with various projectile attacks, ground slams, and a powerful energy beam.
- Strategy: This is a multi-stage fight.
- Phase 1: Projectile Barrage: Ugh-Zan III will primarily use his plasma projectiles. Focus on dodging and using the Rocket Launcher and Cannon. Keep moving around the arena. Look for power-ups like Serious Damage and Invulnerability that spawn around the edges.
- Phase 2: Energy Beam & Ground Slam: As his health depletes, he'll introduce a devastating energy beam and ground slams. The beam requires constant strafing to avoid. During ground slams, jump to mitigate damage. Continue to pummel him with the Cannon.
- Phase 3: Vulnerable Core: Eventually, Ugh-Zan III will expose a glowing core on his chest. This is his critical weak point. Unleash everything you have, especially the Cannon, into this core. This phase is often short, so make every shot count.
Throughout the fight, manage your ammo carefully. There are ample ammo pickups for the Rocket Launcher and Cannon scattered around the boss arena. Prioritize survival and consistent damage. Don't be afraid to use your Serious Damage power-ups when you have a clear shot at his core.
- Key Locations: The final confrontation in "The Great Pyramid."
