Game Modes
Serious Sam: The First Encounter, while primarily a single-player experience, offers a few distinct ways to enjoy the relentless action. Understanding these modes is crucial for maximizing your fun and tackling the Mental horde effectively. Whether you're a lone wolf or prefer to share the chaos, Sam has you covered.
Single Player Campaign
This is the core experience of Serious Sam: The First Encounter. You, as Serious Sam, are sent back in time to ancient Egypt to stop the alien overlord Mental. The campaign is a linear progression through various levels, each filled with hordes of enemies, secret areas, and powerful boss encounters.
- Objective: Progress through the story, eliminate all threats, and ultimately defeat Mental.
- Difficulty Settings: Before starting a new game, you'll choose your difficulty. This significantly impacts enemy health, damage output, and the number of enemies you encounter.
- Tourist: For players new to FPS games or those who want to experience the story without much challenge. Enemies are weaker, and you take less damage.
- Easy: A good starting point for most players. Provides a decent challenge without being overwhelming.
- Normal: The intended experience. Expect a balanced challenge with plenty of intense firefights.
- Hard: For experienced players. Enemies hit harder, and there are more of them. Resource management becomes critical.
- Serious: The ultimate challenge. Only for the most dedicated and skilled players. Enemies are relentless, and every shot counts. Expect to die frequently.
- Saving Progress: The game features a robust quick-save/quick-load system (F6 to quick-save, F7 to quick-load). Utilize this frequently, especially before entering new areas or after clearing a particularly tough wave of enemies.
- Secret Hunting: Each level contains numerous secret areas, often hidden behind destructible walls, obscure pathways, or clever environmental puzzles. These secrets typically contain valuable items such as:
- Health Pickups: Small Health (1 HP), Large Health (25 HP), and Full Health (100 HP).
- Armor Pickups: Small Armor (50 Armor), Large Armor (100 Armor), and Full Armor (200 Armor).
- Ammo: For all your weapons, from Pistol Bullets to Cannonballs.
- Power-ups: Such as the Invulnerability power-up (briefly makes you immune to damage) or the Serious Damage power-up (doubles your weapon damage for a short period).
- Extra Lives: Rare pickups that grant you an additional life upon death.
- Strategy: Always keep moving. Standing still is a death sentence. Prioritize dangerous enemies (e.g., Kleer Skeletons, Major Biomechanoids) and utilize your entire arsenal. Don't be afraid to retreat and regroup.
Cooperative Campaign
Serious Sam: The First Encounter truly shines in its cooperative mode. Up to 16 You can team up to tackle the entire single-player campaign together. This mode transforms the experience, allowing for coordinated strategies and even more chaotic fun.
- Joining/Hosting: You can either host a new game or join an existing one through the in-game server browser. Ensure your network settings are configured correctly for optimal performance.
- Shared Progress: All players progress through the levels together. If one player reaches a new area, all other players are typically warped to that location.
- Increased Difficulty: While the base difficulty setting remains, the sheer number of enemies often scales with the number of players, ensuring a challenging experience even with a full team.
- Teamwork Essentials:
- Covering Fire: Designate roles, with some players focusing on close-range threats and others on long-range.
- Resource Management: Ammo and health pickups are shared. Communicate with your team about who needs what. Consider leaving health for players who are critically low.
- Reviving: If a teammate falls, you can often revive them by standing near their body for a short period. This is crucial for maintaining team strength.
- Communication: Use voice chat or the in-game text chat to coordinate attacks, warn of incoming enemies, and call out secret locations.
- Friendly Fire: Be mindful of friendly fire settings. On some servers, you can damage your teammates, adding an extra layer of challenge and requiring careful aim.
- Secret Sharing: Discovering secrets together is more rewarding. Call out secret locations to your teammates so everyone can benefit from the extra pickups.
Deathmatch
While not as prominent as the campaign, Serious Sam: The First Encounter also features a classic Deathmatch mode for competitive multiplayer action. This mode strips away the story and focuses purely on player-versus-player combat.
- Objective: Eliminate other players to score points. You with the most points at the end of the match wins.
- Maps: Deathmatch is played on dedicated multiplayer maps, often smaller and more arena-like than campaign levels, designed for fast-paced combat.
- Weapon Spawns: Weapons, ammo, health, and armor are scattered across the map and respawn after a short time. Control of key item spawns is vital for victory.
- Power-ups: Power-ups like Invulnerability and Serious Damage are even more impactful in Deathmatch. Grabbing these at the right time can turn the tide of a battle.
- Strategy:
- Map Knowledge: Learn the layout of each map, including weapon and item spawn points, choke points, and good ambush locations.
- Weapon Preference: Master your preferred weapons. The Shotgun is excellent for close quarters, while the Minigun and Rocket Launcher dominate open areas.
- Movement: Constant movement and strafing are key to avoiding enemy fire.
- Frag Stealing: Try to land the final blow on weakened enemies to secure the frag.
- Customization: Many Deathmatch servers allow for custom rules, such as starting weapons, time limits, and frag limits, offering varied experiences.
