Collectibles
While Serious Sam: The First Encounter is primarily about relentless action, there are several key "collectibles" that are crucial for survival and progression. These aren't hidden trinkets for achievements, but rather vital resources and powerful weaponry that you absolutely need to seek out. Mastering their locations and understanding their utility is paramount to becoming a true Mental-slaying machine.
Health & Armor Pickups
Maintaining your health and armor is critical, especially on higher difficulties. Always be on the lookout for these:
- Small Health (10 HP): Often found in groups or after defeating minor enemies. Don't ignore them, as they add up!
- Large Health (50 HP): These are more strategically placed, usually before or after major engagements. Prioritize picking these up if you're low.
- Mega Health (100 HP, can exceed 100 HP cap): The holy grail of health pickups. These are rare and often hidden or guarded by tough enemies. They allow you to temporarily exceed your maximum health, providing a significant buffer against heavy damage. Always grab these, even if you're at full health, as the extra HP can be a lifesaver.
- Small Armor (25 AP): Similar to small health, these are common and help mitigate damage.
- Large Armor (50 AP): More substantial protection, typically found in areas with heavier enemy presence.
- Mega Armor (100 AP, can exceed 100 AP cap): Like Mega Health, Mega Armor provides a substantial, temporary boost to your protective capabilities, allowing you to tank more hits. These are invaluable for boss fights and intense arena battles.
Strategy: Always try to pick up health and armor when you're at your lowest, but don't be afraid to grab Mega Health/Armor even if you're near full, as the overcharge can be incredibly useful for upcoming encounters.
Weaponry & Ammunition
Sam's arsenal is his best friend. Finding new weapons and keeping them fed with ammo is non-negotiable.
- New Weapons: These are usually found at the start of a new level or after clearing a significant area. They are often highlighted or placed in prominent locations.
- Chainsaw: Your close-quarters solution. Found early in the game.
- Double Shotgun: A staple. Great for mid-range groups and close-up damage.
- Minigun: High rate of fire, excellent for crowd control and sustained damage.
- Rocket Launcher: Explosive power, essential for larger enemies and clearing groups.
- Grenade Launcher: Bouncing explosives, useful for indirect fire and area denial.
- Lasergun: Pinpoint accuracy and high damage, perfect for precision shots and tough single targets.
- Cannon: The ultimate power weapon. Devastating against bosses and large groups. Ammo is scarce, so use it wisely!
- Ammunition Pickups: Scattered throughout levels, often dropped by enemies or found in supply caches.
- Small Ammo Packs: Common, replenish a small amount of specific weapon ammo.
- Large Ammo Packs: Less common, provide a significant boost to a weapon's ammunition.
- Universal Ammo Crates: Rare and highly valuable. These crates replenish a substantial amount of ammo for *all* your currently equipped weapons. Always prioritize these, especially before major battles.
Strategy: Don't be shy about using your powerful weapons, but always keep an eye on your ammo count. If you find a new weapon, experiment with it to understand its strengths and weaknesses. Conserve your most powerful ammo (Cannon, Rockets) for the toughest foes.
Power-Ups
These temporary enhancements can turn the tide of battle. They are usually well-hidden or appear in critical moments.
- Serious Damage: Doubles your weapon damage for a limited time. Absolutely devastating when combined with high-damage weapons like the Rocket Launcher or Cannon. Use it during boss fights or when facing overwhelming numbers.
- Invulnerability: Makes Sam completely immune to damage for a short duration. This is your "panic button" or a strategic tool to push through heavily defended areas or survive a boss's ultimate attack.
- Invisibility: Renders Sam invisible to most enemies for a short period. Useful for bypassing difficult sections, setting up ambushes, or simply catching your breath. Be aware that some enemies can still detect you if you get too close or make too much noise.
Strategy: Power-ups are best saved for crucial moments. Don't waste an Invulnerability on a few basic enemies. Hold onto Serious Damage for a boss or a massive wave of Gnaars. Invisibility can be a great way to reposition or escape a bad situation.
