Unlocking New Endings

Silent Hill 2 is renowned for its multiple endings, each offering a different interpretation of James's journey and his ultimate fate. Your actions throughout the game directly influence which ending you receive. To unlock them all, you'll need to pay close attention to specific triggers:

"Leave" Ending

  • Trigger Conditions: This is generally considered the "good" ending. To achieve it, you need to show compassion and a desire for redemption.
  • Specific Actions:
    • Read Mary's Letter: Ensure you read the letter from Mary in your inventory frequently.
    • Examine Angela's Knife: After finding the Rust-Colored Key in the Blue Creek Apartments, examine the Angela's Knife in her room (Room 109).
    • Listen to Laura's Voice: Pay attention to Laura's dialogue and interactions.
    • Heal Consistently: Use health drinks and first-aid kits regularly, even when not critically injured.
    • Avoid Taking Damage: Try to minimize the damage James takes throughout the game.
    • Examine Mary's Picture: Look at the picture of Mary in the hospital.
    • Listen to the "Voice of Mary" Tape: In the hotel, listen to the tape recorder in Room 312.
    • Do NOT Examine Maria's Body: When Maria dies, avoid lingering or examining her body too closely.

"Maria" Ending

  • Trigger Conditions: This ending suggests James chooses to live in denial, clinging to a false image of Mary.
  • Specific Actions:
    • Protect Maria: Throughout the game, ensure Maria takes minimal damage when she is accompanying you.
    • Spend Time with Maria: Linger in areas where Maria is present, allowing her to follow you for extended periods.
    • Examine Maria's Body: When Maria dies, examine her body multiple times.
    • Avoid Reading Mary's Letter: Try to avoid reading Mary's letter in your inventory as much as possible.
    • Do NOT Examine Angela's Knife.
    • Do NOT Examine Mary's Picture.
    • Do NOT Listen to the "Voice of Mary" Tape.

"In Water" Ending

  • Trigger Conditions: This is often considered the "bad" ending, implying James succumbs to despair and self-punishment.
  • Specific Actions:
    • Take Damage: Allow James to take significant damage throughout the game.
    • Do NOT Heal: Avoid using health items unless absolutely necessary.
    • Read Mary's Letter: Read Mary's letter frequently, emphasizing James's guilt.
    • Examine Angela's Knife: Examine the Angela's Knife in Room 109 of the Blue Creek Apartments.
    • Examine the Hole in the Wall: In the hotel, examine the hole in the wall in Room 312 multiple times.
    • Listen to the "Voice of Mary" Tape: Listen to the tape recorder in Room 312.
    • Do NOT Examine Maria's Body.

"Rebirth" Ending

  • Trigger Conditions: This cryptic ending suggests James attempts to resurrect Mary using ancient rituals. It requires collecting specific hidden items.

    • Book of Lost Memories: Found in the reading room of the Silent Hill Historical Society.
    • Crimson Ceremony: Located in the hotel's recreation room, on the bookshelf.
    • Obsidian Goblet: Found in the Toluca Prison, in the shower room.
    • Book of the Fallen: Located in the hotel, in the lobby's display case.
    • Note: You do not need to read these items, simply pick them up and have them in your inventory.

Bonus Weapons and Items

Completing the game unlocks several powerful and often humorous bonus items, making subsequent playthroughs more interesting and sometimes easier.

Chainsaw

  • Unlock Condition: Complete the game once on any difficulty.
  • Location: After unlocking, the Chainsaw can be found at the very beginning of the game, lying on the ground near the first save point in the forest path leading to Silent Hill.
  • Strategy: A powerful melee weapon with a wide arc, excellent for crowd control against multiple weaker enemies like Lying Figures. Consumes no ammo but is slow to rev up.

Hyper Spray

  • Unlock Condition: Complete the game once. The color of the spray depends on your ranking.
  • Location: Found in the camper van parked on Nathan Avenue, near the entrance to Rosewater Park.
  • Variants & Unlock Criteria:
    • White Hyper Spray: Achieve a 10-star ranking.
    • Green Hyper Spray: Achieve a 7-star ranking.
    • Blue Hyper Spray: Achieve a 5-star ranking.
    • Yellow Hyper Spray: Achieve a 3-star ranking.
  • Strategy: Emits a cloud of toxic gas that damages enemies over time. Different colors have varying damage outputs and durations. The White Hyper Spray is the most potent.

Dog Key

  • Unlock Condition: Unlock all four main endings ("Leave," "Maria," "In Water," "Rebirth").
  • Location: After meeting the unlock condition, the Dog Key will be found in the doghouse located in the small park area across from the Texxon Gas Station on Nathan Avenue.
  • Strategy: This key unlocks a secret room in the Observation Room of the Lakeview Hotel (3rd Floor). Using it there will lead to the infamous "Dog" ending, a humorous and meta conclusion to James's story.

Blue Gem

  • Unlock Condition: Complete the game once.
  • Location: Found in the bathroom of Room 312 in the Lakeview Hotel, after the first playthrough.
  • Strategy: This item is crucial for unlocking the "Rebirth" ending on subsequent playthroughs. Simply pick it up and keep it in your inventory along with the other "Rebirth" items.

Ranking System

After each completion, you'll receive a ranking based on your performance. This ranking influences which Hyper Spray you unlock and is a fun way to challenge yourself. Factors include:

  • Clear Time: Faster times generally lead to better rankings.
  • Saves: Fewer saves are better.
  • Damage Taken: Minimize damage received.
  • Enemies Killed: More kills can sometimes improve rank, but focus on efficiency.
  • Items Used: Fewer health items and ammo used is preferable.
  • Walk/Run Ratio: Running more often is usually better.

New Game+ (NG+)

Upon completing the game, you'll have the option to start a New Game+. This allows you to carry over certain items and unlocks from your previous save, making subsequent runs more manageable or providing new challenges.

  • Carried Over: All unlocked bonus weapons (Chainsaw, Hyper Spray), the Dog Key, and the Blue Gem will be available in their respective locations from the start of the game.
  • Difficulty Options: NG+ allows you to select higher difficulty settings for both combat and riddles, providing a fresh challenge even for seasoned players.
  • Costumes: While not a direct NG+ feature, completing the game can sometimes unlock alternate costumes for James, which can be selected at the start of a new game. Keep an eye out for specific unlock conditions for these, as they often tie into achieving certain endings or rankings.

Embrace the replayability of Silent Hill 2. Each journey through its fog-laden streets offers new insights, scares, and opportunities to delve deeper into James's tormented psyche.
