Score and Unlocks

Beyond simply conquering the Spire, Slay the Spire offers a rich layer of progression through its scoring system and a plethora of unlockable content. Understanding how these mechanics intertwine is crucial for both maximizing your runs and accessing new challenges and strategic options.

Understanding Your Score

At the end of every run, whether victorious or not, you'll be presented with a detailed score breakdown. This score is not just a number; it's a reflection of your efficiency, risk-taking, and overall mastery of the game. Higher scores contribute to your overall progress and can even influence certain unlocks.

  • Victory Bonus: The most significant portion of your score comes from successfully defeating the Heart. This bonus is substantial and scales with the Ascension level.
  • Cards Removed: Each card you remove from your deck contributes to your score. Prioritize removing Strikes and Defends early on at Merchants or through specific events like the Mind Bloom or Designer.
  • Potions Used: Using potions strategically is good, but using fewer can net you a higher score. This encourages careful resource management.
  • Elites Slain: Each Elite enemy you defeat grants a score bonus. Elites are challenging but offer valuable rewards (Relics, rare cards) that can snowball your run. Seek them out, especially in Act 1 and 2, but be mindful of your current deck strength.
  • Bosses Slain: Similar to Elites, defeating Act bosses provides a significant score boost.
  • Rooms Explored: The more rooms you traverse on the map, the higher your score. This encourages exploring branching paths and engaging with more content.
  • Perfect Fights: Achieving a "Perfect" fight (taking no damage) against regular enemies, Elites, and even bosses grants a small bonus. This is a testament to your tactical prowess.
  • Gold Collected: While gold is primarily for purchasing items, accumulating a large sum by the end of your run also contributes to your score.
  • Relics Collected: Each Relic you acquire adds to your score. Prioritize Relics that synergize with your deck, but remember that more Relics generally mean more points.
  • Curses Acquired: Interestingly, acquiring Curses (and managing them) can sometimes grant a small score bonus, reflecting the added challenge. However, this is usually outweighed by the negative impact of the Curse itself.

Unlocking New Content

The core of Slay the Spire's long-term appeal lies in its extensive unlock system. These unlocks are tied to various achievements, character progression, and even specific run conditions. Here's a breakdown of what you can unlock and how:

New Cards

Each character has a unique set of cards that unlock as you play them. These unlocks are primarily tied to gaining experience with that specific character. The more you play a character, the more cards you'll unlock for their card pool, expanding your strategic options for future runs.

  • Character Leveling: Simply playing runs with a character, regardless of victory, contributes to their experience. As you gain levels, new cards will automatically become available. For example, playing Ironclad will eventually unlock powerful cards like Limit Break or Demon Form.
  • Specific Achievements: Some cards might have specific unlock conditions tied to in-game achievements, though most are level-based.

New Relics

Similar to cards, new Relics become available as you progress through the game. These are often tied to specific milestones or character achievements.

  • Ascension Progression: As you climb the Ascension levels, new, more powerful, or unique Relics may enter the general Relic pool. For instance, reaching higher Ascensions can unlock Relics like the Snecko Eye or Bottled Flame.
  • Defeating Specific Bosses: Certain Relics are tied to defeating particular Act bosses for the first time with any character.
  • Character-Specific Relics: Each character has a set of unique starting Relics and some Relics that are more likely to appear for them.

New Potions

New potion types also become available as you play more, offering new tactical choices during your runs.

  • General Progression: Like cards and Relics, new potions are gradually introduced into the game as you complete runs and gain overall experience. Keep an eye out for powerful additions like the Duplication Potion or Gambler's Brew.

New Characters

Unlocking new characters is a major milestone, significantly altering the gameplay experience with unique mechanics and card pools.

  • The Silent: To unlock The Silent, you must successfully complete a run with the Ironclad. This means defeating the Act 3 boss (the Awakened One, Time Eater, or Donu and Deca).
  • The Defect: After unlocking The Silent, you'll need to complete a run with her to unlock The Defect. Again, this requires defeating the Act 3 boss.
  • The Watcher: The Watcher is unlocked after completing a run with The Defect. This progression encourages players to experience each character's unique playstyle.

Ascension Levels

Ascension levels are the primary form of difficulty progression in Slay the Spire. Each Ascension level introduces new challenges and modifiers, making the game progressively harder.

  • Defeating the Act 3 Boss: To unlock the next Ascension level for a specific character, you must successfully defeat the Act 3 boss with that character on the current Ascension level. For example, to unlock Ironclad Ascension 2, you must beat the Act 3 boss with Ironclad on Ascension 1. This process repeats all the way up to Ascension 20.
  • Heart Kill: While not strictly necessary for unlocking Ascensions, defeating the Heart on higher Ascensions is the ultimate challenge and often a personal goal for many players.

The Heart

The true final boss of Slay the Spire, the Corrupt Heart, is a secret encounter that requires specific conditions to unlock and access.

  • Collecting the Three Keys: To fight the Heart, you must collect three special keys within a single run:
    1. Ruby Key: Obtained by choosing to "Burn" a Rest Site. This means you forgo healing or upgrading in favor of gaining the key.
    2. Sapphire Key: Acquired by defeating a Super Elite. These are tougher versions of regular Elites found in Act 3, marked by a special flame icon on the map.
    3. Emerald Key: Found in a random Treasure Chest. Instead of a Relic, you'll be given the option to take the Emerald Key.
  • Act 4 Access: Once all three keys are collected, after defeating the Act 3 boss, you will gain access to Act 4, which consists of a shop, a Super Elite (the Shield and Spear), and finally, the Corrupt Heart.

By understanding and actively pursuing these unlocks, you'll not only deepen your enjoyment of Slay the Spire but also become a more versatile and skilled player, ready to tackle any challenge the Spire throws your way.
