Controls (Advanced)
Mastering the basic controls is just the beginning in Sonic Advance 2. To truly dominate the zones and achieve those coveted S-Ranks, you'll need to understand and execute advanced techniques. These maneuvers leverage character-specific abilities and precise timing to maintain momentum, reach hidden areas, and dispatch enemies efficiently.
Character-Specific Advanced Moves
- Sonic:
- Super Sonic Boost: While at top speed, press and hold the A Button after a jump to initiate a powerful forward dash. This is crucial for clearing large gaps, breaking through certain obstacles, and maintaining speed through complex sections. Practice timing this after ramps and springs for maximum effect.
- Homing Attack Chain: After a Homing Attack (press A in mid-air near an enemy), immediately press A again if another enemy is within range. This allows for rapid enemy traversal and can be used to cross chasms or reach higher platforms by bouncing off a series of airborne foes.
- Cream:
- Chao Glide: Press and hold the A Button after a jump to have Cheese carry Cream, allowing her to glide horizontally. This is invaluable for bypassing tricky platforming sections, reaching distant item boxes (like those containing 1-Up or Invincibility), and safely navigating areas with bottomless pits. The longer you hold, the further you glide.
- Cheese Attack Combo: While gliding, pressing the B Button will send Cheese forward as a projectile. This can be chained with the glide to clear paths of enemies ahead of Cream, maintaining her aerial momentum.
- Tails:
- Flight Ascent: After a jump, repeatedly tap the A Button to make Tails fly upwards. This is essential for accessing high-up routes, collecting out-of-reach Special Rings, and bypassing ground-based hazards. His flight duration is limited, indicated by a small gauge. Conserve it for critical moments.
- Tail Swipe Attack: While flying, pressing the B Button allows Tails to perform a mid-air tail swipe. This is useful for attacking enemies directly above or below him without losing significant altitude.
- Knuckles:
- Wall Climb/Glide: Jump towards a vertical wall and press the A Button to latch on. From here, you can press Up or Down on the D-Pad to climb, or press Right/Left to glide along the wall. This is key for exploring vertical pathways, finding hidden Chaos Emeralds, and bypassing sections that other characters might struggle with.
- Drill Dive: While gliding (after a jump, press and hold A), press the B Button to perform a powerful downward drill. This can break through certain destructible blocks and quickly eliminate enemies below.
Universal Advanced Techniques
- Spin Dash Charge: While standing still, press and hold Down on the D-Pad and repeatedly tap the A or B Button to charge a Spin Dash. Release Down to launch forward at high speed. This is fundamental for building momentum from a standstill, breaking through initial obstacles, and initiating speed runs.
- Mid-Air Trick (Grinding): When hitting a spring, ramp, or certain environmental objects at high speed, press the R Button to perform a trick. This grants a temporary speed boost upon landing and is crucial for maintaining momentum in fast-paced sections. Mastering the timing of these tricks is vital for achieving high scores and S-Ranks. Look for opportunities on curved rails, half-pipes, and after significant jumps.
- Momentum Preservation: The core of Sonic Advance 2 is speed. Learn to use the environment to your advantage.
- Slopes: Utilize downhill slopes to build speed, and jump off the peak of uphill slopes to gain extra height.
- Springs & Dash Panels: Always aim to hit these at optimal angles to maximize the boost they provide.
- Enemy Bouncing: Use the Homing Attack (Sonic) or a well-timed jump attack on enemies to bounce across gaps or over hazards without losing momentum.
