- Sonic the Hedgehog: The fastest character. His Homing Attack allows him to target enemies and springs in mid-air. He also has the Insta-Shield, a brief invincibility frame during a jump.
- Cream the Rabbit: Can fly for a short duration by holding the A button after a jump, making her excellent for reaching high platforms and bypassing obstacles. Her Chao, Cheese, can be used as a projectile attack.
- Miles 'Tails' Prower: Can fly for an extended period by repeatedly pressing the A button in mid-air, similar to Cream but with more vertical control. He can also perform a Tail Swipe attack.
- Knuckles the Echidna: Can glide by holding the A button after a jump, allowing him to cross large gaps. He can also climb walls by jumping into them and pressing the D-Pad towards the wall. His punches are powerful.
- Amy Rose: Wields her Piko Piko Hammer for powerful ground and air attacks. She cannot curl into a ball for a Spin Attack, but her hammer attacks are effective against most enemies. She has a double jump ability.
