Time Attack Strategies
Time Attack in Sonic Advance 2 is all about speed, precision, and knowing the optimal path through each act. Unlike the main game, your primary goal is to reach the goal ring as fast as possible, often sacrificing rings and enemy encounters for pure momentum. Mastering the Boost mechanic and character-specific abilities is crucial for setting record times.
General Time Attack Tips
- Know the Layout: Before attempting a serious run, play through the act a few times in regular mode to memorize the fastest routes, enemy placements, and obstacle patterns.
- Maintain Momentum: The Boost is your best friend. Continuously chaining attacks, spring jumps, and grinding rails will keep your speed high. Avoid coming to a complete stop whenever possible.
- Character Choice Matters: While Sonic is generally the fastest due to his raw speed, other characters like Cream (for flight over obstacles) or Tails (for his aerial recovery) can be advantageous in specific acts. Experiment to find the best fit for each stage.
- Minimize Damage: Getting hit means losing rings and, more importantly, losing precious time recovering. Practice dodging enemies or using the Boost to plow through them without breaking stride.
- Utilize the Spin Dash: For quick starts or regaining speed after a brief stop, the Spin Dash is invaluable. Charge it up fully for maximum initial velocity.
- Master the Boost: The Boost is activated by pressing the R button after building up enough speed. It makes you invincible to most enemies and obstacles, allowing you to cut through sections quickly. Learn when and where to activate it for maximum efficiency.
Act-Specific Strategies
Leaf Forest Act 1 (Sonic)
Leaf Forest Act 1 is an excellent stage to practice your Time Attack skills due to its relatively straightforward layout. Sonic is the recommended character here for his speed.
- Opening Dash: Immediately after starting, perform a Spin Dash to gain initial speed.
- First Boost Opportunity: As you hit the first ramp, activate your Boost. This will carry you over the initial enemies and into a series of loops.
- Upper Path Preference: Always aim for the highest possible path. In Leaf Forest, this often involves hitting springs at the right angle or grinding rails. For instance, after the first set of loops, there's a spring that can launch you to an upper rail.
- Avoiding the Lower Route: There's a section with a series of platforms and enemies that leads to a lower path. Instead, look for a spring or a well-timed jump to stay on the upper level, which often has speed boosters or more direct routes.
- Grind Rails for Speed: Utilize every grind rail you encounter. They provide consistent speed and often bypass slower ground sections.
- Final Stretch: Towards the end, there's a long straightaway with several enemies. Maintain your Boost here to plow through them and reach the goal ring without interruption.
Hot Crater Act 2 (Cream)
Hot Crater Act 2 can be tricky with its lava pits and vertical sections. Cream's flight ability makes her a strong contender for fast times here.
- Initial Flight: Start with a Spin Dash. As you approach the first gap, use Cream's flight to glide over it, bypassing the lower path with the collapsing platforms.
- Navigating Vertical Shafts: In sections with vertical shafts and moving platforms, use Cream's flight to ascend quickly. Don't wait for platforms if you can fly past them.
- Lava Pit Avoidance: Hot Crater is full of lava. Cream's flight allows you to completely bypass many of these hazards, saving time and avoiding damage. Look for opportunities to fly directly over large lava pools instead of taking winding paths around them.
- Spring Launch Optimization: When hitting springs, immediately begin flying to gain extra height and distance, potentially skipping entire sections or landing on higher, faster routes.
- Enemy Management: While flying, you can often avoid enemies entirely. If an enemy is in your flight path, use Cheese to attack it without breaking your aerial momentum.
- Final Descent: Towards the end, there's a series of downward slopes. Maintain your Boost if possible, or use quick jumps and Spin Dashes to keep your speed high until the goal.
