Game Modes

Sonic Advance 3 offers several game modes to keep players engaged, from the core story experience to competitive multiplayer and speedrunning challenges. Understanding each mode's objectives and how to navigate them is key to mastering the game.

Story Mode (1P Game)

This is the main campaign of Sonic Advance 3, where you'll follow Sonic and his friends as they attempt to stop Dr. Eggman's latest scheme to conquer the world. The game progresses through various Zones, each with multiple Acts and a boss battle.

  • Objective: Complete all Zones, defeat Dr. Eggman, and collect all seven Chaos Emeralds to unlock the true ending.
  • Gameplay: You start by selecting a main character (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, or Cream) and then a partner character. The combination of characters dictates your team's unique abilities and special attacks.
  • Progression:
    1. Navigate the Zone Map, which acts as a hub for each world.
    2. Enter and complete Acts 1, 2, and 3 of each Zone.
    3. Collect 100 Rings in an Act to earn an extra life.
    4. Find the Goal Ring at the end of each Act to clear it.
    5. After clearing Act 3, you'll face the Zone Boss. Defeat the boss to advance to the next Zone.
    6. Chaos Emeralds: To earn a Chaos Emerald, you must find a hidden Chao in each Act of a Zone (Acts 1-3). Once all three Chaos are found, a Special Stage will become available on the Zone Map. Successfully complete the Special Stage to earn a Chaos Emerald.
  • Tips: Experiment with different character pairings to find the team that best suits your playstyle. Some partners excel at combat, others at reaching high places, and some offer unique movement options. For example, Sonic and Tails can perform a Team High Jump, while Sonic and Knuckles have a powerful Team Attack.

Time Attack

For players who love to push their limits and achieve the fastest times, Time Attack mode is the ultimate challenge. This mode focuses purely on speed and efficiency through individual Acts.

  • Objective: Complete each Act as quickly as possible.
  • Access: Select "Time Attack" from the main menu. You can then choose any Act you have already cleared in Story Mode.
  • Gameplay: You play through a chosen Act with the goal of reaching the Goal Ring in the shortest time. There are no rings to collect for extra lives, and the focus is solely on movement and avoiding obstacles.
  • Strategies:
    • Memorize level layouts and optimal routes.
    • use character abilities and partner actions to maintain momentum and bypass sections quickly.
    • Practice specific jumps and enemy placements to minimize slowdowns.
    • Consider which character pairing offers the best speed and maneuverability for each particular Act. For instance, Sonic's speed and Tails' flight can be invaluable for certain layouts.
  • Records: Your best times for each Act are saved, allowing you to track your progress and compete against yourself.

Multiplayer

Sonic Advance 3 features a robust multiplayer component, allowing up to four players to compete or cooperate using a Game Boy Advance Link Cable.

  • Access: Select "Multiplayer" from the main menu.
  • Modes:
    • Battle Mode: Compete against other players in various challenges.
      • Race: A head-to-head race to the finish line in a selected Act. The first player to reach the Goal Ring wins.
      • Chao Collecting: Players compete to collect the most Chao within a given Act. Chao are scattered throughout the level, and strategic movement is key.
      • Ring Collecting: The objective is to gather the most Rings before time runs out or the Act is completed. Rings lost from taking damage still count towards the total if collected again.
    • Co-op Mode: Work together with a friend to clear Acts in Story Mode.
      • Gameplay: Two players control a team, with one player as the main character and the other as the partner. This allows for coordinated team actions and can make challenging sections easier.
      • Benefits: Ideal for new players or for experiencing the game with a friend. Communication and teamwork are crucial for effective co-op play.
  • Requirements: Each player needs a copy of Sonic Advance 3 and a Game Boy Advance system. A Game Boy Advance Link Cable is required to connect the systems.
  • Tips: In Battle Mode, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each character and their partner abilities can give you an edge. For example, Amy's hammer attack can be useful for clearing paths or stunning opponents in a race.
