Walkthrough (General Structure)

Welcome to the comprehensive walkthrough for Sonic Advance 3! This section will detail the general structure of the game, guiding you through each Zone, Act, and the crucial steps to progress and unlock the true ending. Unlike previous Sonic Advance titles, Sonic Advance 3 features an interconnected world map, adding a layer of exploration between stages. Mastering this structure is key to collecting all the Chaos Emeralds and defeating Dr. Eggman and Gemerl for good.

World Map Navigation

After completing the tutorial stage (Route 99 Act 1), you'll be introduced to the World Map. This map allows you to select Zones, revisit completed Acts, and access special areas. Here's how it generally works:

  • Zone Selection: Each major area on the map represents a Zone (e.g., Sunset Hill, Ocean Base). Move your character icon to the desired Zone and press the action button to enter.
  • Act Selection: Within each Zone, you'll typically find three Acts and a Boss Battle. You must complete Act 1, then Act 2, then Act 3, and finally defeat the Zone Boss to unlock the next Zone on the World Map.
  • Revisiting Zones/Acts: You can always return to previously completed Zones and Acts to collect missed items, try for better scores, or search for hidden Chao.
  • Special Stages: Access to Special Stages is granted by collecting a specific number of Special Keys within a Zone. More on this below.

Completing a Zone: The Core Loop

The fundamental progression through Sonic Advance 3 involves clearing each Zone. Here's a breakdown of the steps for each Zone:

1. Clear Act 1

This is your introduction to the Zone's unique mechanics and enemies. Focus on learning the stage layout, identifying speed routes, and getting a feel for your chosen character and partner combination. Keep an eye out for:

  • Rings: Collect as many as possible. 100 rings grant an extra life.
  • Item Boxes: These contain various power-ups like Invincibility, Speed Shoes, 10-Ring boxes, and Shields.
  • Special Keys: These are crucial for Special Stages. There are 10 hidden in each Act. You'll need to find 5 of them to unlock the Special Stage for that Zone.
  • Goal Plate: Hit this to complete the Act.

2. Clear Act 2

Act 2 often introduces more complex platforming challenges and enemy placements. The level design usually builds upon the concepts introduced in Act 1. Continue to search for Special Keys and rings.

3. Clear Act 3

Act 3 is typically the most challenging of the three standard Acts in a Zone. Expect more intricate layouts, tougher enemy formations, and potentially more difficult platforming sections. This is your last chance to collect Special Keys before facing the Zone Boss.

4. Defeat the Zone Boss

After completing Act 3, you'll proceed to the Zone's Boss Battle. Each boss is unique and requires a specific strategy to defeat. Pay attention to their attack patterns and look for openings to strike. Successfully defeating the boss unlocks the next Zone on the World Map.

Special Stages and Chaos Emeralds

Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds is essential for unlocking the true ending and the final boss battle. Special Stages are where you earn these precious gems.

  • Unlocking Special Stages: To access a Special Stage, you must collect at least 5 Special Keys within any of the three Acts of a given Zone. Once you have 5 keys, a portal to the Special Stage will appear on the World Map for that Zone.
  • Special Stage Gameplay: Special Stages in Sonic Advance 3 are 3D tube-like levels where you collect rings and avoid obstacles. The goal is to collect a target number of rings before reaching the end of the stage.
  • Chaos Emerald Rewards: Successfully completing a Special Stage will reward you with one Chaos Emerald. There are seven Zones in the game, each with a corresponding Chaos Emerald.
  • Replaying Special Stages: If you fail a Special Stage, you can re-attempt it as long as you still possess the 5 Special Keys for that Zone. If you run out of keys, you'll need to go back into the Acts and collect more.

Character and Partner Combinations

Sonic Advance 3 emphasizes its unique tag-team system. Your choice of character and partner significantly impacts gameplay and can make certain sections easier or harder. Experiment with different combinations!

  • Main Character: This is the character you directly control.
  • Partner Character: This character follows you and can be called upon for a special "Team Attack" or "Action" by pressing the R button. Each partner has unique abilities (e.g., Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide and break certain walls, Amy can use her hammer, Cream can fly and attack with Cheese).
  • Strategic Advantage: Certain partner abilities are crucial for reaching hidden areas, collecting specific items, or overcoming particular obstacles. Don't be afraid to switch partners on the World Map to tackle different challenges.

Saving Your Progress

The game automatically saves your progress after completing an Act or defeating a boss. You can also manually save from the World Map by selecting the "Save" option. It's always a good idea to save regularly, especially after collecting a Chaos Emerald or clearing a difficult Zone.
