Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds is the most significant side quest in Sonic Advance 3, as it unlocks the true final zone, Altar Emerald, and the Super Sonic transformation for the final boss. Each Chaos Emerald is obtained by successfully completing a Special Stage.

Finding Special Springs:

In each of the first six zones (Route 99, Sunset Hill, Ocean Base, Twinkle Snow, Cyber Track, Chaos Angel), there is one Special Spring hidden in Act 3. These springs are often in secluded areas, behind destructible walls, or requiring a specific character's ability to reach. Our main walkthrough for each Act 3 provides hints on their general location.

Special Stage Mechanics:

Once you enter a Special Spring, you'll be transported to a Special Stage. These stages are 3D half-pipe races where you control Sonic (or your current leader) and must collect a certain number of rings before time runs out, while avoiding bombs. The required ring count increases with each subsequent Special Stage.

  1. Movement: Use the D-Pad to move left and right within the half-pipe.
  2. Jump: Press A to jump.
  3. Boost: Press B to perform a boost, increasing your speed. This is crucial for catching up to rings and avoiding bombs.
  4. Rings: Collect as many rings as possible.
  5. Bombs: Avoid the bombs, as hitting them will cause you to lose rings and slow down.

The key to success in Special Stages is to maintain speed, anticipate ring formations, and quickly dodge bombs. Using the boost strategically is vital. If you fail a Special Stage, you'll be returned to the beginning of the Act you were in, and the Special Spring will reappear, allowing you to try again. Successfully completing all seven Special Stages will grant you access to the true final boss.
