Knuckles excels at vertical exploration and finding unique shortcuts by scaling walls. His gliding and climbing abilities open up entirely new pathways in every stage. To play Knuckles effectively, focus on:
- Glide and Climb Synergy: After a jump, press A again to glide. Guide your glide towards walls to automatically grab onto them. Use the D-Pad to climb up or down. This is his primary method of traversal.
- Wall Exploration: Many stages have hidden passages or high platforms accessible only by climbing. Knuckles can often bypass entire sections of a stage by scaling walls.
- Punch Attack: Press B to perform a powerful punch. This can break certain obstacles that other characters might need to Spin Dash through, and it's a strong close-range attack.
- Finding Shortcuts: Knuckles often has access to the most direct, albeit sometimes hidden, routes through a stage by utilizing his climbing abilities.
Knuckles' ground speed is similar to Tails, making him slower than Sonic. His gliding can also be tricky to control precisely in tight spaces. However, for players who enjoy exploring every nook and cranny and finding alternative routes, Knuckles is the ideal character. He's also excellent for finding hidden items and Special Stage Rings.
