Enemy List & Strategies

Welcome to the comprehensive enemy guide for Sonic Advance! Mastering these foes is key to achieving high scores and smooth runs through each Zone. Remember, a well-timed jump or Spin Attack is often all it takes, but some enemies require specific approaches. Always prioritize collecting Rings; they are your primary defense against taking damage.

General Enemy Tactics

  • Spin Attack (A button while moving/jumping): Your bread-and-butter offensive move. Most small enemies are defeated in a single hit.
  • Jump Attack (A button): Effective against airborne enemies or for precise targeting.
  • Homing Attack (Sonic only, A button twice in air near enemy): Allows Sonic to home in on nearby enemies, useful for chaining attacks or crossing gaps.
  • Knuckles' Glide Attack (B button in air): Knuckles can glide into enemies, often destroying them.
  • Tails' Flight Attack (A button repeatedly in air): Tails can fly into enemies, offering a safe way to deal damage.
  • Amy's Hammer Attack (B button): Amy's unique ground attack. Can hit enemies directly in front of her.
  • Invincibility (Item Box): Grab an Invincibility monitor to become temporarily immune to damage and destroy any enemy you touch.

Neo Green Hill Zone Enemies

The first zone introduces you to the basic enemy types. These are generally slow and predictable, perfect for practicing your Spin Attack.

Coconuts

  • Description: Small, monkey-like robots that throw coconuts. They are stationary or move in small patterns.
  • Location: Found throughout Neo Green Hill Zone, often perched on ledges or in trees.
  • Strategy:
    1. Approach cautiously, observing their throwing pattern.
    2. Wait for them to throw a coconut, then quickly jump or Spin Attack into them.
    3. Alternatively, if you have momentum, a direct Spin Attack will usually destroy them before they can react.

Crabmeat

  • Description: Crab-like robots that scuttle back and forth, occasionally firing small projectiles.
  • Location: Common ground enemy in Neo Green Hill Zone.
  • Strategy:
    1. These enemies have a simple patrol pattern. Wait for them to turn around.
    2. Perform a Spin Attack or jump on their head when they are not firing.
    3. Be mindful of their projectiles, which are easily dodged by jumping over them.

Secret Base Zone Enemies

This zone introduces more mechanically-oriented enemies and some that require a bit more thought to defeat safely.

Spiny

  • Description: Small, spiky robots that roll along the ground. They are immune to direct Spin Attacks from the top.
  • Location: Found on various platforms and pathways in Secret Base Zone.
  • Strategy:
    1. Do NOT jump directly on top of a Spiny, as you will take damage.
    2. The safest way to defeat them is with a Spin Attack from the side.
    3. If you're Sonic, a Homing Attack can bypass their spikes. Knuckles can glide into them, and Tails can fly into them safely. Amy's Hammer Attack also works.

Bomb

  • Description: Flying robots that drop bombs. They often hover in place or move in short patterns.
  • Location: Frequently encountered in the air sections and over pits in Secret Base Zone.
  • Strategy:
    1. Observe their bomb-dropping rhythm.
    2. Jump and Spin Attack them between bomb drops.
    3. If playing as Tails, flying directly into them is a safe and effective method.
    4. Sonic's Homing Attack is excellent for quickly dispatching these airborne threats.

Casino Paradise Zone Enemies

Expect enemies that fit the casino theme, often with unpredictable movements or defenses.

Roller

  • Description: Small, spherical robots that roll along surfaces, often changing direction when hitting a wall.
  • Location: Common ground enemy in Casino Paradise Zone, especially on sloped areas and platforms.
  • Strategy:
    1. Their movement can be fast. Anticipate their bounces off walls.
    2. A well-timed Spin Attack from any direction will destroy them.
    3. Be careful not to get caught between two Rollers or a Roller and a wall.

Batbot

  • Description: Bat-like robots that fly in erratic patterns, sometimes swooping down.
  • Location: Found in open areas and higher platforms within Casino Paradise Zone.
  • Strategy:
    1. Their flight paths can be unpredictable. Wait for them to descend slightly.
    2. Use a jump or Spin Attack when they are within reach.
    3. Sonic's Homing Attack is particularly useful for hitting these agile enemies.
    4. Tails can easily fly up to their level to attack.

While Sonic Advance relies on precise momentum-based jumping to defeat enemies, Sonic Forces emphasizes the modern Homing Attack mechanic to chain together rapid aerial takedowns.

While Sonic Advance relies on precise 2D positioning to defeat badniks, Sonic Frontiers evolves this combat by incorporating a lock-on system and cinematic parries.
