Special Stages
Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds is essential for unlocking the true ending of Sonic Advance. These precious gems are hidden within challenging Special Stages, accessible through giant springs found in specific zones. Unlike previous Sonic titles, these stages are a 3D chase sequence where you must collect a target number of rings while avoiding bombs. Precision and quick reflexes are key!
Entering a Special Stage
To enter a Special Stage, you must first locate a giant spring. These are often hidden off the main path or require specific character abilities to reach. Once found, simply jump into the spring to be transported to the Special Stage.
- Neo Green Hill Zone: There is one giant spring in Act 1.
- Secret Base Zone: Look for a giant spring in Act 1.
- Casino Paradise Zone: Act 1 contains a giant spring.
- Ice Mountain Zone: Both Act 1 and Act 2 have giant springs.
- Angel Island Zone: A giant spring can be found in Act 1.
- Egg Rocket - Cosmic Angel Zone: The final giant spring is located here.
Special Stage Mechanics & Tips
Each Special Stage presents a unique track filled with rings, obstacles, and bombs. Your goal is to collect the required number of rings before time runs out or you hit too many bombs. Here's what you need to know:
- Movement: Your character automatically moves forward. Use the D-pad (or equivalent) to steer left and right, aligning yourself with ring paths.
- Rings: The primary objective. Collect as many as possible. Some rings are in straight lines, others in curved patterns, and some are "trick rings" that require precise timing to grab.
- Bombs: These are your main hazard. Hitting a bomb will cause you to lose a significant number of rings and slow you down, potentially costing you the stage. Avoid them at all costs!
- Perspective: The 3D perspective can be tricky. It often feels like you're not lined up with rings even when you are. Trust your instincts and make small, precise adjustments.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Special Stages are notorious for being difficult. Don't get discouraged if you fail repeatedly. Each attempt helps you learn the layout and timing.
- Character Choice: While all characters can enter Special Stages, some players find certain characters easier to control due to their size or perceived turning radius. Experiment!
Strategies for Success
Conquering these stages requires more than just good reflexes. Employ these strategies to maximize your chances of collecting those elusive Chaos Emeralds:
General Strategies
- Focus on Ring Chains: Prioritize collecting long chains of rings. These are your most efficient way to reach the target count.
- Anticipate Turns: Look ahead on the track to anticipate upcoming turns and ring formations. Begin steering early to smoothly navigate the path.
- Small Adjustments: Rather than wide, sweeping movements, make small, precise nudges with the D-pad to fine-tune your position. Over-correcting often leads to missing rings or hitting bombs.
- Bomb Avoidance: If a bomb is directly in your path and unavoidable, sometimes it's better to sacrifice a few rings by swerving wide to avoid the bomb's penalty.
- Memorization: The layouts of the Special Stages are fixed. After a few attempts, you'll start to memorize the tricky sections, ring placements, and bomb locations. Use this knowledge to plan your route.
Specific Stage Challenges
Each Special Stage introduces new challenges and layouts. Pay close attention to:
- Winding Paths: Later stages feature extremely winding and narrow paths of rings. Here, gentle, continuous steering is more effective than sharp turns.
- Ring Gaps: Some sections have gaps in ring chains. Be prepared to quickly adjust your trajectory to catch the next segment.
- Bomb Clusters: Watch out for areas where bombs are tightly clustered, often right after a sharp turn or near a valuable ring. Approach these sections cautiously.
- The Seventh Special Stage: This stage is notoriously difficult. It features incredibly tight ring formations and bombs placed strategically to trip you up. The "impossible trick ring with bombs right on top of it" mentioned by players requires extreme precision. Often, you'll need to slightly undershoot or overshoot the initial ring to avoid the bomb, then quickly correct to grab the next set. This stage is a true test of your mastery of the Special Stage mechanics.
With persistence and these detailed strategies, you'll be well on your way to collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds and unlocking the true power of Sonic Advance!
