Maximizing your score in Sonic Advance is about more than just speed; it's a combination of efficient enemy dispatch, ring collection, and swift stage completion. Understanding the point values for various actions and items is crucial for achieving those coveted high scores.

Ring Collection

Rings are your primary source of points outside of enemy encounters and time bonuses. Every Ring you collect adds directly to your score. The more Rings you have at the end of a Zone, the higher your score will be. Aim to collect as many as possible, but remember that taking damage will cause you to lose your collected Rings. Prioritize keeping your Rings, especially when approaching the end of an Act.

  • Individual Rings: Each Ring collected is worth 10 points.
  • Ring Boxes: These provide a quick burst of Rings. A standard Ring Box gives 10 Rings (100 points), while larger ones can yield 20 or even 50 Rings (200-500 points).
  • Shields: While not directly scoring items, Shields (like the standard Shield or the Magnetic Shield) protect your Rings. A Magnetic Shield is particularly useful for attracting distant Rings, ensuring you don't miss any in fast-paced sections.

Enemy Defeat Bonuses

Destroying Eggman's Badniks is not only necessary for progression but also a significant source of points. The method of defeat and the type of enemy can influence the points awarded.

  • Standard Badniks: Most common enemies, like those found in Neo Green Hill Zone or Casino Paradise Zone, are worth 100 points each when defeated.
  • Chaining Attacks: Defeating multiple enemies in quick succession, especially with a Spin Attack or Homing Attack (Sonic only), can sometimes yield bonus points, though the game primarily focuses on individual enemy values.
  • Bosses: Defeating the Act Bosses, such as the Egg Mobile in Neo Green Hill Zone or the various contraptions in Egg Rocket/Cosmic Angel Zone, awards a substantial bonus. While the exact value varies per boss, expect several thousand points for a successful boss takedown.

Time Bonus

Speed is a core tenet of Sonic Advance, and the game rewards you for completing Zones quickly. The faster you finish an Act, the higher your time bonus will be. This bonus is calculated based on the time remaining on the clock when you pass the Goal Plate.

  • Optimal Time: Aim for under 30 seconds for the maximum time bonus in most Acts. This is challenging and often requires memorizing layouts and optimal routes.
  • Decreasing Returns: The time bonus decreases significantly as your completion time increases. For example, finishing an Act in 1 minute will yield a much lower bonus than finishing in 30 seconds.

Act Clear Bonus

  2. Efficient Enemy Clearing: Don't just run past enemies; defeat them for the points. Learn optimal attack patterns to clear groups quickly.
  3. Ring Management: Prioritize collecting Rings, but be mindful of hazards. If you have a large number of Rings, play cautiously to avoid losing them.
