Accessing the Chao Garden

There are three distinct Chao Gardens, each with its own aesthetic:

Hero Garden: Accessed via the Hero Story's Chao Garden entrance (e.g., after completing City Escape as Sonic). This garden is bright and cheerful, ideal for raising Hero-aligned Chao.
Dark Garden: Accessed via the Dark Story's Chao Garden entrance (e.g., after completing Iron Gate as Shadow). This garden is gothic and mysterious, perfect for Dark-aligned Chao.

Collecting Animals and Chaos Drives

Animals and Chaos Drives are crucial for raising your Chao's stats. They are found hidden within every action stage:

Animals: These small creatures (e.g., Bear, Gorilla, Penguin, Bird, Rabbit) provide significant stat boosts and can alter your Chao's appearance. Each animal type typically boosts a specific stat (e.g., Birds boost Fly, Rabbits boost Run).

Feeding and Petting

Petting: Simply walk up to your Chao and press the action button to pet it. This increases its happiness and affection towards you. Happy Chao are more likely to evolve positively.

Chao Kindergarten

Chao Daycare: Leave your Chao here to have its stats slowly increase over time, even when you're not actively playing.
Chao Doctor: The doctor can assess your Chao's health, happiness, and current stats. He can also heal sick Chao.

Chao Races

Once your Chao has grown a bit, you can enter them into races at the Chao Stadium. There are different race types, each testing specific stats:

Hero/Dark Races: Specific races for Hero or Dark-aligned Chao, often with unique obstacles.

Breeding Chao

When two adult Chao of opposite genders are happy and have high affection, they may breed. Place them near each other, and if they have hearts floating around them, they might lay an egg. Important Note: A Chao must be in its second life cycle (after reincarnation) to breed. First-generation Chao cannot breed.

Reincarnation

After a certain amount of time (roughly 5-6 in-game hours of active play), your Chao will enter a cocoon and then reincarnate. It will return as a baby Chao, but with a portion of its previous stats retained. This allows for continuous improvement and the creation of incredibly powerful Chao over multiple generations. The color of the cocoon indicates its alignment (white for Hero, black for Dark, clear for Neutral).
