Chao Raising Guide

Welcome to the ultimate guide for raising the happiest, strongest, and most unique Chao in Sonic Adventure 2! The Chao Garden offers a delightful diversion from the main story, allowing you to nurture these adorable creatures and even compete with them. This section will walk you through everything you need to know to become a master Chao breeder.

Accessing the Chao Garden

There are three distinct Chao Gardens, each with its own aesthetic:

  • Hero Garden: Accessed via the Hero Story's Chao Garden entrance (e.g., after completing City Escape as Sonic). This garden is bright and cheerful, ideal for raising Hero-aligned Chao.
  • Dark Garden: Accessed via the Dark Story's Chao Garden entrance (e.g., after completing Iron Gate as Shadow). This garden is gothic and mysterious, perfect for Dark-aligned Chao.
  • Neutral Garden: The initial garden you'll access from either story. It's a balanced environment suitable for any Chao, especially during their infancy.

To enter a Chao Garden, simply find the Chao Garden portal at the end of any stage's results screen. You can also return to the Chao Garden from the main menu by selecting "Chao Garden."

Chao Stats and Evolution

Your Chao's abilities are determined by its stats, which are influenced by the animals and Chaos Drives you give it. These stats are:

  • Swim: Affects how well your Chao swims in races.
  • Fly: Affects how well your Chao flies in races.
  • Run: Affects how fast your Chao runs in races.
  • Power: Affects your Chao's strength in races (e.g., breaking obstacles).
  • Stamina: Affects your Chao's endurance in races.

Chao evolve based on the primary stats you raise and the alignment (Hero or Dark) of the character who interacts with them most. For instance, consistently giving a Chao animals that boost its Run stat while playing as Sonic will likely result in a Hero-aligned Run Chao.

Collecting Animals and Chaos Drives

Animals and Chaos Drives are crucial for raising your Chao's stats. They are found hidden within every action stage:

  • Animals: These small creatures (e.g., Bear, Gorilla, Penguin, Bird, Rabbit) provide significant stat boosts and can alter your Chao's appearance. Each animal type typically boosts a specific stat (e.g., Birds boost Fly, Rabbits boost Run).
  • Chaos Drives: These colorful, glowing capsules provide smaller, more consistent stat boosts. The color of the Chaos Drive indicates which stat it will primarily affect:
    • Green: Run
    • Yellow: Fly
    • Blue: Swim
    • Red: Power

Strategy for Collection:

  1. Replay Stages: Animals and Chaos Drives respawn every time you play a stage. Replay your favorite stages or those with easily accessible items.
  2. Prioritize Character Abilities:
    • Sonic/Shadow: Excellent for speed-running stages and collecting items quickly. Their Homing Attack can often reach hidden items.
    • Knuckles/Rouge: Ideal for exploration. Their digging and climbing abilities allow access to many hidden areas containing valuable animals and drives.
    • Tails/Eggman: Their mech suits can destroy obstacles and reach high places, often revealing hidden stashes.
  3. Look for "Chao Boxes": These special wooden boxes, often marked with a Chao emblem, contain multiple animals or Chaos Drives. They are usually found in less obvious locations.

Nurturing Your Chao

Feeding and Petting

  • Chao Fruit: These are the primary food source for your Chao. They grow on trees within the Chao Garden. Pick them up and offer them to your Chao. Different fruits may have subtle effects on happiness or growth.
  • Petting: Simply walk up to your Chao and press the action button to pet it. This increases its happiness and affection towards you. Happy Chao are more likely to evolve positively.

Chao Kindergarten

The Chao Kindergarten, accessible from any Chao Garden, offers various facilities to enhance your Chao's development:

  • Chao Daycare: Leave your Chao here to have its stats slowly increase over time, even when you're not actively playing.
  • Chao Doctor: The doctor can assess your Chao's health, happiness, and current stats. He can also heal sick Chao.
  • Chao Black Market: Here, you can purchase rare fruits, hats, and even special eggs using Rings collected in action stages. This is essential for obtaining unique Chao colors or accessories.
  • Chao School: Enroll your Chao in various classes (e.g., Drawing, Singing, Exercise) to teach them new skills and improve their behavior. These skills can be displayed in the Chao Race events.

Chao Races

Once your Chao has grown a bit, you can enter them into races at the Chao Stadium. There are different race types, each testing specific stats:

  • Beginner Races: Good for new Chao to gain experience.
  • Challenge Races: More difficult, requiring higher stats.
  • Hero/Dark Races: Specific races for Hero or Dark-aligned Chao, often with unique obstacles.

Winning races earns you emblems, which contribute to your overall game completion, and sometimes special items for your Chao.

Breeding Chao

When two adult Chao of opposite genders are happy and have high affection, they may breed. Place them near each other, and if they have hearts floating around them, they might lay an egg. The offspring will inherit traits and stats from both parents, making selective breeding a key strategy for creating powerful Chao.

Important Note: A Chao must be in its second life cycle (after reincarnation) to breed. First-generation Chao cannot breed.

Reincarnation

After a certain amount of time (roughly 5-6 in-game hours of active play), your Chao will enter a cocoon and then reincarnate. It will return as a baby Chao, but with a portion of its previous stats retained. This allows for continuous improvement and the creation of incredibly powerful Chao over multiple generations. The color of the cocoon indicates its alignment (white for Hero, black for Dark, clear for Neutral).

By following these detailed steps and strategies, you'll be well on your way to raising a championship-winning Chao army!
