Act 1 introduces the Yellow Drill. When activated, Sonic can burrow through soft ground (marked with cracks or a distinct texture) or underwater. To find Red Star Rings, you'll often need to use the Drill to access underground tunnels or submerged areas. One Red Star Ring might be in a hidden tunnel directly below the main path. Another could be in an underwater section, requiring you to drill through a barrier. While drilling, you can move with the left stick and jump out of the ground/water. Practice quick transitions from drilling to running to maintain speed.
