Sweet Mountain Act 1

Welcome to Sweet Mountain Act 1, a sugary paradise that introduces the invaluable Orange Wisp (Rocket). This Wisp transforms Sonic into a high-flying projectile, granting access to previously unreachable platforms and secret pathways. Mastering the Rocket Wisp is crucial for collecting all Red Star Rings and achieving a perfect score in this act. Beyond the Rocket Wisp, you'll encounter bouncy cakes, crumbling cookie platforms, and several confectionary-themed enemies. Keep an eye out for the adorable, yet mischievous, Caterkiller Jr. enemies and the projectile-launching Motobugs.

Act 1 Walkthrough & Red Star Ring Guide

Sweet Mountain Act 1 is a relatively straightforward linear level, but its hidden collectibles demand keen observation and precise Wisp usage. Below is a detailed, step-by-step guide to navigate the act and secure all five Red Star Rings.

  1. Initial Ascent & First Rocket Wisp Tutorial:

The act begins with a gentle slope leading to your first encounter with the Orange Wisp. Grab the Wisp capsule to activate your Rocket ability. You'll immediately see a series of bouncy cakes. Use these to gain initial height, then activate the Rocket Wisp by pressing the designated button (Wii Remote: A button / DS: X button) to launch Sonic even higher. This section serves as a tutorial for the Rocket Wisp's basic mechanics.

  2. First Red Star Ring - The High Cookie Platform:

After the initial Rocket Wisp tutorial section, you'll land on a solid platform. Look immediately to your left. There's a tall, isolated cookie platform hovering high above the main path. A single Orange Wisp capsule will be conveniently placed nearby. Grab the Wisp, then perform a charged jump (hold jump button) followed by a Rocket Wisp activation. Aim carefully to land on this high platform. The First Red Star Ring is waiting there. Be quick, as the Rocket Wisp's duration is limited.

  3. Navigating the Crumbling Cookie Bridge:

Proceed forward from the first Red Star Ring's location (or the main path if you missed it). You'll encounter a long bridge made of crumbling cookie platforms. These platforms will break apart shortly after Sonic lands on them, so maintain momentum. A few Motobugs will patrol this area; either boost through them or use a Homing Attack to clear your path. There are also several rings scattered above this bridge.

  4. Second Red Star Ring - Above the Large Gap:

Following the crumbling cookie bridge, you'll come to a significant gap with a bottomless pit below. On the far side, you'll notice a platform that seems just out of reach. Before attempting to cross, look for an Orange Wisp capsule located on a small, lower platform to the right of the main path. Grab this Wisp. Now, from the edge of the main platform, perform a running jump and activate the Rocket Wisp at the peak of your jump. Aim to clear the gap and land on the distant platform. The Second Red Star Ring is suspended mid-air directly above the center of this large chasm. A well-timed and powerful Rocket launch is essential here.

  5. The Vertical Ascent & Third Red Star Ring:

Once you've crossed the large gap, you'll enter a more vertical section. You'll see a series of bouncy cakes and small, staggered platforms leading upwards. Keep an eye out for another Orange Wisp capsule. Collect it. As you ascend using the bouncy cakes, you'll notice a high, narrow ledge to your left, far above the main path. This ledge has a small, circular switch on it. Use the Rocket Wisp to launch yourself onto this high ledge and activate the switch. Activating the switch will cause a temporary platform to appear further ahead. The Third Red Star Ring is located on this newly formed temporary platform. You'll need to quickly jump and boost to reach it before it disappears.

  6. Fourth Red Star Ring - Successive Rocket Boosts:

Continue your ascent through the vertical section. You'll encounter several more Orange Wisp capsules. This part of the act requires successive Rocket Wisp activations to scale multiple vertical platforms. Look for a series of three small, closely spaced platforms leading almost straight up. There will be an Orange Wisp capsule at the base of this sequence. Grab it, then perform a series of quick Rocket Wisp boosts, launching from one platform to the next. The Fourth Red Star Ring is hovering just above the highest of these three platforms. Precision and quick reflexes are key to grabbing it without falling.

  7. Final Red Star Ring - The Peak of the Candy Cane Spire:

After the section requiring successive Rocket boosts, you'll reach a more open area with a prominent, tall candy cane-striped spire in the center. At the base of this spire, you'll find another Orange Wisp capsule. Grab it. This is your final opportunity to use the Rocket Wisp for a Red Star Ring. Perform a powerful, fully charged Rocket launch from the ground near the spire. Aim to reach the very peak of the candy cane spire. The Fifth Red Star Ring is perched precariously at its apex. This requires a near-perfect launch and trajectory.

  8. Race to the Goal Ring:

Once all Red Star Rings are collected, the path to the goal ring is relatively straightforward. You'll encounter a few more Caterkiller Jr. enemies and some springboards. Maintain your speed and use Homing Attacks to clear any obstacles. The Goal Ring will be visible shortly after the final Red Star Ring section.

Enemy Encounters & Tips

  • Motobugs: These wheeled enemies often patrol platforms. They can shoot small projectiles. A simple Homing Attack or a well-timed jump over them will suffice.
  • Caterkiller Jr.: Small, segmented caterpillar-like enemies. They move slowly but can be annoying. Homing Attack is the most efficient way to deal with them.
  • Spikes: Watch out for spike traps that pop out of the ground or ceiling. Their patterns are usually predictable.
  • Bouncy Cakes: These provide a significant vertical boost. Combine them with a Rocket Wisp for extreme height.
  • Crumbling Cookie Platforms: Maintain momentum! These platforms will break after a short delay. Don't linger.

Common Pitfalls & Missables

  • Missing Rocket Wisp Capsules: The Red Star Rings are heavily reliant on the Rocket Wisp. Always grab any Orange Wisp capsules you see, even if you think you don't immediately need them.
  • Imprecise Rocket Launches: The Rocket Wisp requires a bit of practice. Don't be afraid to restart if you miss a Red Star Ring due to a bad launch. Practice aiming and timing your boosts.
  • Falling into Gaps: Sweet Mountain Act 1 has several bottomless pits, especially around the second Red Star Ring. Always be mindful of your footing.
  • Overlooking High Platforms: Many secrets and rings are located on platforms far above the main path. Always look up and around for alternative routes.

By following this detailed guide, you should be able to collect all Red Star Rings and achieve a high score in Sweet Mountain Act 1, setting you up for success in the rest of Sonic Colors!
