Your first major boss encounter in Sonic Forces is against Zavok, one of Eggman's most imposing lieutenants. This battle takes place in a circular arena and primarily features Modern Sonic. Zavok's attacks are telegraphed, but his speed and powerful strikes can be challenging if you're not careful. The key to victory lies in dodging his charges and striking back during his vulnerable moments.
Phase 1: Ground Assault
- Attacks: Zavok will primarily charge at you, attempting to stomp or swipe. He may also perform a ground pound that creates a shockwave.
- Strategy:
- Dodge Charges: Use Quick Step to rapidly move out of the way when Zavok charges. He'll often leave himself open for a moment after a missed charge.
- Homing Attack: After he misses an attack or pauses, use a Homing Attack to strike him. You'll typically need to hit him multiple times to stun him.
- Boost: Use your Boost to quickly close distances or escape dangerous areas.
- Vulnerability: After a failed charge or a ground pound, Zavok will be briefly stunned or slow to recover, allowing you to land Homing Attacks.
Phase 2: Aerial Barrage
- Attacks: Once you've dealt enough damage, Zavok will take to the air, launching projectiles or attempting aerial dives.
- Strategy:
- Avoid Projectiles: Quick Step to dodge the energy blasts he fires from above.
- Wait for Dive: Zavok will eventually dive towards you. Dodge this attack, and he'll often land on the ground, creating another opening.
- Homing Attack: As he lands or recovers from a dive, use Homing Attack to strike him again.
- Vulnerability: After his aerial dive attacks, he'll be vulnerable on the ground.
Repeat these strategies, focusing on dodging and counter-attacking during his recovery frames. Keep your Boost Gauge full by collecting rings around the arena. Zavok's attacks are powerful, but with patience and precise dodging, you'll bring him down. The arena is fairly open, so use the space to your advantage.
