Game Mechanics & Systems

Mastering the core mechanics and understanding the various systems in Sonic Forces is crucial for achieving high ranks, finding hidden collectibles, and ultimately defeating Dr. Eggman's forces. This section will break down the fundamental elements of gameplay, offering actionable advice and strategic insights.

Player Characters & Abilities

You'll primarily control three distinct character types, each with unique abilities that influence gameplay and level traversal:

  • Modern Sonic: The quintessential speedster. Modern Sonic excels at boosting through stages, grinding rails, and using his Homing Attack to chain together enemy eliminations and maintain momentum.
    • Boost: Consumes the Boost Gauge (represented by the yellow bar at the bottom of the screen). Activate by pressing the designated Boost button (e.g., R2/RT on controllers). Essential for clearing large gaps, breaking through obstacles, and reaching top speeds. Strategically collect White Wisps to refill this gauge.
    • Homing Attack: Lock onto enemies or specific environmental objects (like springs or balloons) by jumping and pressing the attack button. This is vital for navigating enemy-dense areas and reaching elevated platforms.
    • Stomp: While airborne, press the designated Stomp button (e.g., L2/LT) to rapidly descend, breaking certain ground obstacles or damaging enemies below.
  • Classic Sonic: A throwback to the Genesis era, Classic Sonic focuses on platforming precision and momentum-based movement. He cannot boost or homing attack.
    • Spin Dash: Hold down the attack button while crouching to charge up a burst of speed. Release to launch forward, breaking through obstacles and enemies. Crucial for gaining initial momentum and clearing certain pathways.
    • Drop Dash: While airborne, hold the jump button to charge a Spin Dash. Upon landing, Classic Sonic will immediately launch into a Spin Dash, maintaining momentum. This is a more advanced technique for continuous speed.
    • Jump Bounce: Classic Sonic can bounce off springs and certain enemies with greater height and control than Modern Sonic, allowing access to higher routes.
  • Avatar (Custom Hero): Your personalized character, equipped with a Wispon and various abilities. The Avatar's gameplay is highly customizable.
    • Wispon: Each Wispon grants a unique attack and a special "Burst" ability, powered by collecting different colored Wisps. Experiment with various Wispons to find one that suits your playstyle.
      • Drill Wispon: Primary attack is a short-range melee strike. Burst ability allows the Avatar to burrow underground, bypassing obstacles and enemies, and emerging with an explosive attack. Requires Yellow Wisps.
      • Burst Wispon: Primary attack is a flamethrower. Burst ability creates a fiery explosion, damaging all nearby enemies and propelling the Avatar upwards. Requires Red Wisps.
      • Lightning Wispon: Primary attack is an electric whip. Burst ability creates a chain of lightning that targets multiple enemies, stunning them and allowing for easy follow-up attacks. Requires Cyan Wisps.
      • Cube Wispon: Primary attack creates a block in front of the Avatar. Burst ability creates a series of blocks that can be used as platforms or to crush enemies. Requires Blue Wisps.
      • Void Wispon: Primary attack creates a black hole that pulls in enemies. Burst ability teleports the Avatar a short distance, useful for dodging or reaching inaccessible areas. Requires Purple Wisps.
    • Grapple Hook: The Avatar can use a grapple hook to swing across gaps or pull themselves towards designated grapple points (marked with a glowing target icon). This is essential for navigating many Avatar-exclusive sections.
    • Double Jump: A standard platforming ability, allowing for greater vertical reach and mid-air adjustments.

Rings & Health System

Rings are your lifeblood in Sonic Forces. Collecting them is paramount for survival and achieving high scores.

  • Ring Collection: Each Ring collected adds to your total. When you take damage, you will lose all your currently held Rings, scattering them around you. You have a brief window to recollect some of them before they disappear.
  • Invincibility: As long as you possess at least one Ring, you will not be instantly defeated by enemy attacks or environmental hazards (excluding bottomless pits, crushing walls, or instant-death lasers). Instead, you'll lose your Rings.
  • Ring Bonus: At the end of each stage, your remaining Rings contribute to your score. Aim to finish stages with as many Rings as possible.

Wisps & Power-Ups

Wisps are alien creatures that grant temporary abilities or refill gauges. Keep an eye out for them, as they are often strategically placed to aid in progression or uncover secrets.

  • White Wisps: Exclusively for Modern Sonic, these instantly refill a portion of his Boost Gauge. Prioritize collecting them, especially before challenging sections.
  • Colored Wisps: These are primarily for the Avatar, powering their Wispon's Burst ability. Each Wispon corresponds to a specific Wisp color (e.g., Red Wisps for the Burst Wispon). Collect them to charge your Burst Gauge.
  • Item Boxes: These classic Sonic staples provide various temporary power-ups:
    • Invincibility: Grants temporary invincibility, allowing you to run through enemies and hazards without losing Rings. Look for the sparkling aura around your character.
    • Speed Shoes: Increases your movement speed for a short duration, useful for clearing time trials or reaching distant platforms.
    • 10 Rings: Instantly adds 10 Rings to your current count.
    • Shield: Provides a single hit of protection. If you take damage, the shield will absorb the blow, and you won't lose any Rings.

Grading System & Ranking

Your performance in each stage is evaluated and assigned a rank (S, A, B, C, D) based on several factors:

  • Time: The faster you complete the stage, the better your score. Learning optimal routes and maintaining momentum is key.
  • Rings: The number of Rings you have at the end of the stage significantly impacts your score.
  • Enemies Defeated: Eliminating enemies contributes to your score. Use Homing Attacks and Wispon abilities effectively.
  • Wisp Usage: For Avatar stages, strategic use of Wispon Burst abilities can also contribute to your score.
  • Red Star Rings: Collecting all five Red Star Rings in a stage provides a substantial score bonus. These are often hidden in challenging or off-path locations.

Aim for an "S" rank on every stage to unlock special rewards and demonstrate your mastery of the game.
