Introduction

Welcome, Resistance fighter, to our comprehensive guide for Sonic Forces! Whether you're a seasoned speedster or a rookie recruit, this guide is designed to help you liberate the world from Dr. Eggman's iron grip. We'll cover everything from basic controls to advanced strategies for achieving those coveted S-Ranks.

Getting Started: The Main Menu

Upon launching Sonic Forces, you'll be greeted by the Main Menu. Here's a quick breakdown of what you'll find:

  • Story Mode: This is where the core adventure unfolds. Progress through a series of stages as Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, and your custom Avatar. This is your primary objective for completing the game.
  • Episode Shadow (DLC): If you own the Episode Shadow DLC, this option will appear, allowing you to play through a prequel story featuring Shadow the Hedgehog. We highly recommend playing this after completing the main story for narrative context.
  • Avatar Customization: Dive into this menu to personalize your custom hero. You can change species, appearance, and equip newly acquired Wispons and clothing items. Experiment with different Wispons to find one that suits your playstyle!
  • Mission List: Check your progress on daily and weekly missions here. Completing these often rewards you with Rings, clothing items, and experience for your Avatar.
  • Options: Adjust game settings such as controls, audio, and display preferences.

Understanding Your Characters

You'll be playing as three distinct character types, each with unique abilities:

  • Modern Sonic: The fastest thing alive! Modern Sonic excels at boosting through stages, homing attacking enemies, and grinding rails. His primary attack is the Homing Attack, and his signature move is the Boost, which consumes the white Wisp gauge.
  • Classic Sonic: A blast from the past! Classic Sonic focuses on platforming, Spin Dashes, and collecting Rings. He cannot boost or homing attack in the same way as Modern Sonic, relying on momentum and precise jumps. Look for hidden pathways and springs to maintain speed.
  • Avatar: Your custom hero! The Avatar uses several Wispons, special weapons that grant unique abilities.

Wispon Overview for Avatar

Your Wispon choice significantly impacts your Avatar's gameplay. Here are a few examples you'll encounter early on:

  • Burst Wispon: (Default) Fires a short-range flamethrower. Its special ability, the "Burst Dash," allows for a quick, fiery burst forward, useful for clearing obstacles or reaching elevated platforms. You'll obtain this early in the game.
  • Lightning Wispon: (Found in Stage 2: Chemical Plant: Spaceport) Shoots an electric whip that can chain attacks between multiple enemies. Its special ability, the "Lightning Chain," lets you instantly warp between enemies or specific electric points, offering excellent mobility and crowd control.
  • Cube Wispon: (Found in Stage 3: City: Ghost Town) Generates blocks that can be used to attack enemies or create temporary platforms. Its special ability, the "Cube Smash," creates a powerful shockwave upon landing, destroying nearby enemies and certain environmental elements.

Experiment with different Wispons as you unlock them to find your preferred combat and traversal style. Each Wispon's special ability consumes the colored Wisp gauge.

First Steps: Stage 1: Green Hill: Lost Valley

Your journey begins in the iconic Green Hill Zone. This stage serves as an excellent introduction to Modern Sonic's core mechanics.

  1. Initial Boost: As soon as the stage begins, hold down the Boost button (typically R2/RT) to accelerate. Maintain your boost as much as possible to achieve high speeds and clear gaps.
  2. Homing Attack Practice: You'll encounter groups of basic Egg Pawns. Jump and press the Homing Attack button (typically Square/X) to chain attacks between them. This is crucial for maintaining momentum and reaching higher areas.
  3. Red Star Ring 1: After the first set of grind rails, you'll land on a platform. Look to your left for a small spring that leads to a higher path. The first Red Star Ring is located here, requiring a precise Homing Attack chain to collect.
  4. Grind Rails: use the grind rails to traverse long distances quickly. You can jump between rails to find alternative paths or collect Rings.
  5. Red Star Ring 2: Shortly after a series of loops, you'll see a large enemy robot. Defeat it with a Homing Attack, then look for a series of springs on the right side of the path that lead to an elevated platform where the second Red Star Ring awaits.
  6. Wisps: Keep an eye out for White Wisps, which replenish your Boost gauge, and other colored Wisps that power your Avatar's Wispons.

Focus on learning the flow of the stage and mastering Modern Sonic's speed. Don't worry too much about S-Ranks on your first run; simply enjoy the ride!
