Unlockables
Beyond simply completing the main story, Sonic Generations offers a wealth of unlockable content to enhance your gameplay experience and provide new challenges. This section details how to acquire these hidden gems, from character customization options to bonus stages and more.
Skill Shop Unlocks
The Skill Shop, accessible in the White World, is your primary hub for acquiring new abilities and enhancements for both Classic and Modern Sonic. While many skills are available for purchase with collected rings, some require specific conditions to be met before they appear in the shop's inventory.
- Skill Slot Expansion: To unlock additional skill slots, allowing you to equip more abilities simultaneously, you must progress through the main story. Each time you defeat a major boss (e.g., Chaos, Shadow, Silver), a new skill slot will become available for purchase. For example, defeating the Perfect Chaos boss in the Classic Era will unlock the first additional skill slot.
- Advanced Skills: Certain powerful skills, such as "Power Sneakers" for Classic Sonic (increased speed) or "Homing Attack Boost" for Modern Sonic (enhanced homing attack range and damage), only become available after achieving specific ranks on stages. Aim for A or S ranks on at least three stages within an era (Classic, Dreamcast, Modern) to unlock these higher-tier skills for purchase.
- Character-Specific Skills: Some skills are tied to interacting with specific characters in the White World. For instance, after completing all Challenge Gates associated with Tails, he may offer a unique skill for Classic Sonic in the shop, such as "Shield Barrier," which provides temporary invincibility. revisit characters after completing their challenges.
Collection Room Unlocks
The Collection Room, also found in the White World, houses a treasure trove of concept art, music, and character profiles. Unlocking these items often involves a combination of finding hidden collectibles and achieving high performance in stages.
- Concept Art Galleries: Each completed stage, regardless of rank, will unlock a small selection of concept art related to that stage. To unlock the complete concept art gallery for an entire era (e.g., Classic Era Concept Art), you must achieve at least a B rank on all main stages within that era.
- Music Tracks: New music tracks for the in-game sound test are primarily unlocked by collecting Red Star Rings. Every five Red Star Rings you collect will unlock a new track. To unlock the full soundtrack, you'll need to find all 100 Red Star Rings scattered across the game's stages.
- Character Profiles: Detailed character profiles for Sonic, Tails, Eggman, and other key figures are unlocked by completing specific Challenge Gates. For example, completing all Classic Sonic Challenge Gates will unlock Classic Sonic's full profile, detailing his history and abilities.
Bonus Stages and Modes
Beyond the main story and Challenge Gates, Sonic Generations features a few hidden stages and gameplay modes that offer unique experiences.
- Super Sonic Transformation: To unlock the ability to transform into Super Sonic for both Classic and Modern Sonic, you must first collect all seven Chaos Emeralds. These are obtained by defeating the seven Rival Battles and Boss Battles throughout the game. Once all emeralds are acquired, the Super Sonic skill will become available for purchase in the Skill Shop, allowing you to equip it and transform during stages when you have at least 50 rings.
- Extra Stage: "Planet Wisp": This bonus stage, featuring both Classic and Modern Sonic acts, is unlocked after completing the main story and defeating the final boss. It offers a fresh challenge with unique level design and enemies.
- Time Attack Mode: This mode is automatically unlocked for each stage as you complete it in the main story. It allows you to replay stages with a focus on achieving the fastest possible clear times, competing against online leaderboards.
