Sonic Heroes revolves around three distinct character types, each with unique abilities crucial for progression and combat. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and knowing when to switch, is the cornerstone of successful gameplay. You'll always have one of each type in your team.

Speed Characters:
- Abilities: Fastest movement, Homing Attack, Light Dash, Grind Rails.
- Purpose: Ideal for traversing long distances quickly, attacking airborne enemies, and activating speed-sensitive mechanisms. They are generally the primary damage dealers against single targets.
- Examples: Sonic, Shadow, Amy, Espio.
Fly Characters:
- Abilities: Can fly for a limited time, Thunder Shoot (projectile attack), lift heavy objects.
- Purpose: Essential for reaching high platforms, crossing gaps, and attacking enemies from a distance. Their Thunder Shoot can also stun certain enemies.
- Examples: Tails, Rouge, Cream, Charmy.
Power Characters:
- Abilities: Strongest attacks, can break obstacles, glide/hover (some), can perform a Team Attack.
- Purpose: Best for destroying barriers, defeating heavily armored enemies, and clearing groups of foes. Their attacks often have a wider area of effect.
- Examples: Knuckles, Omega, Big, Vector.
The synergy between these types is paramount. For instance, a Speed character might initiate an attack, followed by a Power character to finish off a tough enemy, or a Fly character to reach a hidden area that a Speed character then navigates.
