Special Stages
Special Stages in Sonic Heroes are your gateway to collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds, which are essential for unlocking the true ending and the Last Story. To access a Special Stage, you first need to acquire a Special Stage Key within a regular level. Once you have a key, simply complete the level, and you'll be transported to the Special Stage.
Each Special Stage presents a unique challenge: a high-speed chase down a vibrant, twisting tube, collecting a set number of colored spheres while avoiding obstacles and enemies. The ultimate goal is to catch the Chaos Emerald floating at the end of the stage.
Acquiring Special Stage Keys
Special Stage Keys are hidden within specific cages found throughout each level. These cages can only be broken by your team's Power character. Keep an eye out for them, as their locations can sometimes be a bit off the beaten path. While most stages contain two key cages, some might have only one or even three. If you pick up a second key while already holding one, the new key will simply disappear, so there's no benefit to collecting multiples within a single run.
Pro-Tip: Team Rose's levels are generally shorter and less complex, making them an excellent choice for farming Special Stage Keys if you're struggling to find them with other teams.
Special Stage Mechanics
Once inside a Special Stage, your team will be automatically boosted forward. Your primary objective is to collect the required number of colored spheres before reaching the Chaos Emerald. The spheres come in two main types:
- Blue Spheres: These are your main objective. Collect as many as possible to meet the stage's requirement.
- Red Spheres: Collecting these will grant you a speed boost, which is crucial for catching up to the Chaos Emerald and navigating tricky sections.
You'll need to skillfully maneuver your team left and right to grab spheres and dodge various obstacles. Missing too many spheres or hitting too many obstacles can cause you to lose momentum, making it harder to reach the Emerald. If you fail to collect enough spheres or fall off the track, you'll exit the Special Stage without the Chaos Emerald, but you'll retain your Special Stage Key for another attempt.
General Special Stage Strategies
- Prioritize Blue Spheres: Your main focus should always be on collecting the blue spheres. Keep a mental count or glance at the counter to ensure you're on track.
- use Red Spheres Wisely: Red spheres provide a significant speed boost. Use them strategically to cover large gaps, overcome slow sections, or catch up if you've fallen behind. Don't be afraid to grab them even if you're already fast, as sustained speed is key.
- Anticipate Obstacles: The Special Stages are filled with various hazards, including bumpers, gaps, and enemies. Learn their patterns and anticipate their movements to avoid collisions. A collision can slow you down considerably.
- Master Movement: Practice precise left and right movements. The controls can feel a bit sensitive at high speeds, so getting a feel for the turning radius is vital.
- Don't Be Afraid to Retry: Special Stages can be challenging, especially the later ones. If you fail, don't get discouraged! You keep your key, so you can immediately try again from the level select screen.
- Team Choice: While all teams can complete Special Stages, some players find certain teams easier to control due to their unique movement characteristics. Experiment to find which team you're most comfortable with.
Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds is a rewarding experience and a necessary step towards unlocking the game's true conclusion. Good luck, and may your sphere-collecting skills be sharp!
