Continue System

Unlike its predecessor, Sonic & Knuckles introduces a more forgiving continue system, allowing players to pick up closer to where they left off after a Game Over. Understanding how to maximize your continues is crucial for conquering the game's later, more challenging zones.

Earning Continues

Continues are primarily earned by collecting a specific number of rings in the Bonus Stages. These stages are accessed by passing a Star Post with 20 or more rings. There are two types of Bonus Stages, each offering different rewards:

Slot Machine Bonus Stage

This Bonus Stage is a classic slot machine game. To earn a continue, you need to match three "Continue" icons. Here's how to play and increase your chances:

  • Access: Hit a Star Post with 20+ rings.
  • Gameplay: Rings you collected in the stage are automatically inserted as "credits." Press the jump button to stop each reel.
  • Strategy:
    • Aim to stop the first reel on a "Continue" icon.
    • For the second reel, try to stop it slightly after the "Continue" icon appears, as there's a slight delay.
    • The third reel is the trickiest. Practice timing to hit the "Continue" icon.
  • Reward: Matching three "Continue" icons grants you one continue. Matching other icons (like Rings or Super Rings) awards additional rings or a shield, but not a continue.

Gumball Machine Bonus Stage

This Bonus Stage involves a gumball machine where you aim to collect specific items. While it's less direct for continues, it can provide extra lives, which indirectly extend your playtime.

  • Access: Hit a Star Post with 20+ rings. This stage is less common than the Slot Machine.
  • Gameplay: Your character is launched into a gumball machine-like contraption. You bounce around, collecting items.
  • Strategy:
    • Focus on collecting 1-Up icons, which appear as a small character sprite (Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles depending on your character). Each 1-Up grants an extra life.
    • Avoid the "Bomb" gumballs, as hitting them will end the Bonus Stage prematurely.
    • Try to maneuver your character to hit multiple 1-Up icons before time runs out or you hit a bomb.
  • Reward: Collecting 1-Up icons grants extra lives, which are essential for surviving longer and reducing the need for continues.

Using Continues

When you run out of lives and receive a "Game Over" screen, you will be presented with the option to continue. Each continue allows you to restart the current zone from its beginning, with three lives. This is a significant improvement over previous Sonic titles, which often forced a restart from the very first zone.

  • Game Over Screen: After losing all your lives, the screen will display "Game Over."
  • Continue Prompt: You will see a prompt asking if you wish to continue.
  • Selection: Use the D-pad to select "Yes" or "No" and press the Start button.
  • Effect: Selecting "Yes" will consume one of your earned continues and restart you at the beginning of the zone where you got the Game Over. You will begin with three lives.
  • No Continues: If you have no continues remaining, selecting "Yes" will not be an option, or it will simply return you to the title screen.

Strategic Management of Continues

Continues are a precious resource, especially in the later acts. Here are some tips for managing them effectively:

  • Prioritize Bonus Stages: Always aim to hit Star Posts with at least 20 rings to access Bonus Stages. The Slot Machine Bonus Stage is your primary source for continues.
  • Practice Bonus Stages: The Slot Machine requires a bit of timing. Don't be afraid to practice in earlier zones to get a feel for it.
  • Conserve Lives: The more lives you have, the less you'll rely on continues. Collect 1-Up items found within stages and from the Gumball Machine Bonus Stage.
  • Know When to Restart: If you're struggling significantly in a particular act and have already used a continue, sometimes it's better to restart the entire game (if you're not too far in) to build up a fresh stock of lives and continues.
  • Character Choice: Knuckles' gliding ability can sometimes make certain sections easier, potentially reducing lost lives and thus conserving continues. Consider your character choice for challenging zones.

By understanding and strategically utilizing the continue system, you'll be much better equipped to overcome Dr. Robotnik's schemes and reach the end of Sonic & Knuckles.
