Beyond the basic shield, Sonic & Knuckles introduces three elemental shields, each offering unique defensive and offensive properties. These are often found in specific zones where their abilities are most beneficial. Like the basic shield, they protect you from one hit before disappearing.
- Flame Shield: Protects you from fire-based attacks and lava. As Sonic, pressing the jump button again in mid-air performs a fiery dash attack. As Knuckles, it provides fire immunity.
- Aqua Shield: Protects you from drowning and allows you to breathe underwater indefinitely. As Sonic, pressing the jump button again in mid-air performs a double jump. As Knuckles, it provides water immunity and a double jump.
- Lightning Shield: Attracts rings towards you and protects you from electric attacks. As Sonic, pressing the jump button again in mid-air performs a double jump. As Knuckles, it provides electric immunity and a double jump.
