Act 1 (Knuckles) - Death Egg Zone
Welcome, Guardian! Knuckles' journey through Death Egg Zone Act 1 is a unique challenge, leveraging his distinct abilities to traverse the metallic labyrinth. Unlike Sonic, Knuckles' path often involves scaling walls and gliding across chasms, offering a fresh perspective on this perilous zone. Prepare for a gauntlet of gravity-defying traps and robotic sentinels before confronting the menacing Red Eye boss.
Knuckles' Unique Abilities in Death Egg Zone
- Glide: Press and hold the jump button in mid-air to glide. This is crucial for crossing large gaps, bypassing certain hazards, and reaching otherwise inaccessible platforms. Master its use to control your descent and land precisely.
- Climb: Jump against a wall and hold forward to latch on. You can then move up or down. This ability is paramount for navigating the verticality of Death Egg, finding hidden paths, and avoiding ground-based dangers.
- Punch: Knuckles' standard attack. Effective against most enemies. A well-timed punch can also break certain destructible blocks that Sonic might need a Spin Dash for.
Death Egg Zone Act 1 Walkthrough (Knuckles)
Knuckles' route through Death Egg Zone Act 1 diverges significantly from Sonic's, often presenting different challenges and opportunities. Pay close attention to the environment for climbable surfaces and glide-friendly gaps.
- Initial Descent and Gravity Flips:
- The Act begins with a vertical shaft. Instead of simply falling, use Knuckles' climb ability on the side walls to control your descent and grab any rings or item boxes you see.
- You'll soon encounter the signature gravity-flipping sections. When the gravity shifts, use your glide to maintain control. Often, you'll need to glide across a gap that becomes a ceiling when gravity reverses, then climb up the "new" floor to progress.
- Hazard: Watch out for the electrified barriers that appear and disappear with the gravity changes. Time your movements carefully.
- Conveyor Belt Gauntlet:
- This section features numerous conveyor belts that can push you into spikes or off ledges. Use Knuckles' climbing ability to bypass some of these by scaling the walls above or below the belts.
- Enemy: Encounter the Slicer robots (buzzsaw enemies). They move predictably. Punch them when they're not spinning their blades.
- Look for destructible blocks (often marked with a metallic texture) on the walls. A well-placed punch can open up shortcuts or reveal hidden ring stashes.
- Vertical Shafts and Laser Traps:
- You'll navigate several vertical shafts with lasers that sweep across the screen. Climb the walls to ascend, but be mindful of the laser's pattern. Often, there are safe alcoves to duck into.
- Pitfall: Don't rush these sections. A single hit from a laser can send you plummeting into spikes or off-screen.
- Utilize your glide to cross wider gaps in these shafts, especially when platforms are scarce.
- Pressing Platforms and Spikes:
- This area introduces large pressing platforms that move up and down, threatening to crush you. Use your climbing ability to scale the walls next to these, often finding safer, higher routes.
- Enemy: Spiker robots (small, spiky enemies that roll). They are invulnerable when rolled up. Wait for them to unroll before attacking.
- There are often hidden passages behind these pressing platforms that Knuckles can access by climbing over them.
- Final Approach to the Boss:
- The path to the boss arena involves a series of intricate gravity shifts and moving platforms. Use your glide to navigate these sections with precision.
- Collect any remaining rings. Having a full stock of rings is crucial for the upcoming boss fight.
Boss Strategy: The Red Eye
Knuckles' Act 1 boss is the Red Eye, a formidable robotic sentinel that guards the path forward. This boss requires precise timing and utilization of Knuckles' unique abilities.
Boss Name: Red Eye
Attack Patterns:
- Eye Beam: The Red Eye will open its central "eye" and fire a powerful laser beam horizontally across the arena. This beam covers a significant portion of the screen.
- Bomb Drop: It will occasionally drop small, explosive bombs onto the platform. These bombs explode after a short delay, creating a small blast radius.
- Charge Attack: The Red Eye will sometimes charge across the screen, attempting to ram Knuckles. It typically does this after firing its eye beam.
Strategy:
- Phase 1 (Initial Attacks):
- The Red Eye starts by hovering in the center of the screen. It will open its eye and fire a beam.
- Weak Point: The Red Eye's only vulnerability is its central eye when it's open.
- When the eye opens, quickly jump and use Knuckles' punch attack. You might get one or two hits in before it closes.
- After firing, the Red Eye will either drop bombs or perform a charge attack.
- Avoiding Bombs: The bombs are easy to avoid; simply move away from their landing zone.
- Avoiding Charge: When it charges, jump over it or, if you're quick, climb a nearby wall to get out of its path.
- Phase 2 (Gravity Shift):
- After taking a few hits, the Red Eye will initiate a gravity shift, flipping the arena upside down. This is where Knuckles' glide and climb become essential.
- The boss's attack patterns remain similar, but your movement is now inverted.
- Crucial Tactic: When the gravity shifts, use your glide to control your descent and position yourself. Often, the boss will be vulnerable immediately after a gravity shift, giving you a small window to attack.
- You may need to climb on the "ceiling" (which is now the floor) to get into position for a punch.
- Phase 3 (Increased Aggression):
- As the Red Eye takes more damage, its attacks become more frequent and sometimes faster.
- It might fire multiple eye beams in quick succession or drop more bombs.
- Maintain your focus on its eye opening. That is your only opportunity to deal damage.
- Recommended Approach: Stay mobile. Use short glides and quick climbs to dodge its attacks. When the eye opens, quickly jump, punch, and then immediately prepare to evade.
- Common Pitfall: Getting greedy with hits. It's better to get one safe hit than to take damage trying for two.
Victory: After approximately 8-10 successful hits to its open eye, the Red Eye will explode, clearing the path for Knuckles to proceed to his unique final boss encounter in Death Egg Zone.
