Act 1: Master Emerald Chamber (Knuckles)
Welcome, Guardian! As Knuckles the Echidna, your journey through Sonic & Knuckles begins with a direct confrontation in the sacred Master Emerald Chamber. Unlike Sonic or Tails, Knuckles' path in Mushroom Hill Zone is initially blocked, leading him straight to the heart of Angel Island to protect the Master Emerald. This guide will walk you through Knuckles' unique entry into the chamber and the subsequent boss battle against Dr. Robotnik.
Knuckles' Approach to the Master Emerald Chamber
Knuckles' narrative begins with a unique sequence, showcasing his role as the Master Emerald's protector. You won't be navigating a traditional Act 1 level like Mushroom Hill Zone; instead, you're immediately thrust into the dramatic events surrounding the Master Emerald's theft.
- Initial Cutscene: The game opens with Knuckles patrolling Angel Island. You'll witness a cutscene where Dr. Robotnik, having already landed on the island, uses a specialized machine to attempt to steal the Master Emerald. Knuckles, sensing the disturbance, rushes to its defense.
- Direct Entry: There is no preceding level for Knuckles in Act 1. You are instantly placed within the Master Emerald Chamber, face-to-face with Robotnik and his contraption.
- Objective: Your immediate goal is to prevent Robotnik from making off with the Master Emerald. This translates directly into a boss fight.
Boss Battle: Dr. Robotnik's Master Emerald Grabber
Upon entering the chamber, you'll find Dr. Robotnik piloting a large, multi-limbed machine designed specifically to extract the Master Emerald from its pedestal. This is your first major challenge as Knuckles.
Boss Overview
- Boss Name: Master Emerald Grabber (Unofficial) / Robotnik's Master Emerald Machine
- Pilot: Dr. Robotnik
- Location: Master Emerald Chamber, Angel Island
- Weaknesses: The machine's arms and Robotnik's cockpit.
- Recommended Strategy: Utilize Knuckles' unique abilities – his powerful punch and versatile glide – to dismantle the machine.
Phase 1: Dismantling the Arms
Robotnik's machine is equipped with two large, articulated arms that it uses to try and dislodge the Master Emerald. These arms are also its primary offensive weapons in this phase.
- Arm Attacks: The arms will swing wildly, attempting to hit Knuckles or smash against the ground. They can also extend to grab at the Master Emerald.
- Targeting the Arms: Focus your attacks on the glowing red joints or the main body of the arms. Each arm requires several hits to disable.
- Knuckles' Punch: Use Knuckles' standard punch (jump + attack button) to strike the arms when they are within reach. Timing is crucial to avoid taking damage yourself.
- Glide Attack: If an arm is higher up, jump and then hold the jump button to glide towards it, using your body as an attack. This is particularly effective when the arms are extended.
- Avoidance: Watch for the arms' wind-up animations. When an arm is about to swing or slam, quickly move out of its path. The chamber floor provides ample space for evasion.
- Ring Management: Collect any rings that appear from destroyed environmental elements or from Robotnik's machine itself. Maintaining a ring count is vital for survival.
Phase 2: Attacking the Cockpit
Once both arms are destroyed, Robotnik's machine will change its attack pattern, and his cockpit will become the primary target.
- Cockpit Exposure: With the arms gone, Robotnik's cockpit, located at the top of the machine, will be more exposed. However, it will still be protected by a force field or a retractable cover at times.
- New Attacks: Robotnik will now primarily use laser attacks, firing energy blasts directly at Knuckles from the cockpit. These lasers can be quick and difficult to dodge if you're not paying attention.
- Timing Your Attack: Wait for Robotnik to open his cockpit or lower his defenses to fire a laser. This is your window of opportunity.
- Knuckles' Glide: This is where Knuckles' glide ability truly shines. Jump towards the machine and then glide upwards, aiming for the cockpit. Your glide attack will inflict damage.
- Wall Climb (Optional but Useful): If you find yourself struggling to reach the cockpit with a direct glide, remember Knuckles can climb walls. Use the chamber's walls to gain extra height before gliding towards Robotnik. This can provide a safer approach angle.
- Repeated Strikes: Continue to dodge Robotnik's laser attacks and glide into his cockpit whenever it's vulnerable. It will take several hits to defeat him.
Common Pitfalls & Tips
- Impatience: Don't rush in. Wait for clear openings to attack, especially against the arms.
- Ring Scarcity: The chamber is relatively sparse with rings. Try to avoid taking damage early on to preserve your initial ring count.
- Glide Control: Practice Knuckles' glide. Mastering its trajectory and duration is key to landing hits on the cockpit and avoiding damage.
- Environmental Awareness: The Master Emerald pedestal itself can sometimes provide a temporary platform or cover, but don't rely on it too heavily.
Aftermath
Upon defeating Dr. Robotnik's machine, he will be momentarily stunned. However, true to his nature, he quickly recovers and, with a final, desperate effort, manages to snatch the Master Emerald. He then makes his escape, leaving Knuckles to witness the theft. This event directly propels Knuckles into his pursuit of Robotnik, leading him to the next zone: Sky Sanctuary Zone.
