Throughout each zone, there are numerous hidden 1-Up monitors that grant an extra life. These are often tucked away in secret passages, behind destructible walls, or at the end of challenging platforming sections. Exploring every nook and cranny, especially with Knuckles' unique abilities, can yield a significant number of extra lives, which are invaluable in later, more difficult zones like Death Egg Zone. Keep an eye out for suspicious-looking walls or pathways that seem to lead nowhere; they often hide these valuable pickups. Some 1-Ups are also awarded for reaching high scores or collecting 100 rings.
