Collecting the Chaos Emeralds
The Chaos Emeralds are exclusively found within the game's Special Stages. These stages are accessed by entering the giant rings hidden throughout each Act. There are a total of 14 Special Stages across the game (two per zone), but only seven contain Chaos Emeralds. The key is to find the giant rings and successfully complete the Spheres mini-game.
Accessing Special Stages
- Locating Giant Rings: Each Act (except boss acts) contains at least one hidden giant ring. These rings are often tucked away in secret passages, behind destructible walls, or at the end of less-obvious paths. Exploration is paramount.
- Entering the Ring: Simply jump into the giant ring once you find it. This will transport you to the Special Stage.
Special Stage Strategy: The Spheres Mini-Game
Inside each Special Stage, you'll find yourself on a 3D sphere-shaped course. Your objective is to collect all the blue spheres while avoiding the red spheres. Touching a red sphere will immediately end the Special Stage, and you'll be returned to the main level without the Emerald.
- Blue Spheres: Run over these to collect them. Collecting all blue spheres on the current screen will transform any adjacent red spheres into blue spheres, allowing you to collect even more.
- Red Spheres: Avoid these at all costs. If you touch one, the Special Stage ends.
- Yellow Spheres: These act as springs, bouncing you in the direction you're moving. Use them to reach higher platforms or to quickly traverse sections.
- Ring Spheres: Collecting 50 rings within a Special Stage grants you a "Continue" in the main game. While not directly tied to the ending, they are a useful bonus.
- Pattern Recognition: Many Special Stages have predictable patterns. Try to memorize the layout and the sequence in which blue spheres appear or transform.
- Cornering: Practice tight turns. Mastering the controls for precise movement on the sphere is crucial for navigating complex layouts and avoiding red spheres.
