Accessing the Sound Test & Level Select (Standalone Sonic & Knuckles)

This method works when playing Sonic & Knuckles as a standalone cartridge, without being locked on to Sonic 3 or Sonic 2.

  1. Start the Game: Power on your Sega Genesis with the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge inserted.
  2. Title Screen Navigation: Once the "Sonic & Knuckles" title screen appears, wait for the demo to begin.
  3. Controller Input: During the demo, press UP, C, DOWN, C, LEFT, C, RIGHT, C on your controller.
  4. Confirmation Sound: If entered correctly, you will hear a ring sound effect.
  5. Return to Title: Press START to return to the title screen.
  6. Access Sound Test: Now, select "1 Player" or "2 Player" and hold down A + START. You will be taken to the Sound Test menu.

From the Sound Test, you can select any music track or sound effect to play. More importantly, this also unlocks the Level Select feature. To access Level Select:

  1. After successfully entering the Sound Test code and returning to the title screen, select "1 Player" or "2 Player" without holding any buttons.

Debug Mode (Standalone Sonic & Knuckles)

  4. Specific Sound Selection: In this second Sound Test, play the following sounds in order: 02, 04, 06, 01.

  6. Start Level: Now, select any stage from the Level Select menu and press START (without holding A).
  7. Activate Debug Mode: Once the level begins, press B to switch to object placement mode. Press A to cycle through objects, and C to place them. Press B again to return to character control.

Debug Mode Controls:

  • B: Toggle between character control and object placement mode.
  • A: In object placement mode, cycles through available objects.
  • C: In object placement mode, places the currently selected object.

  2. Start a Level with Debug Mode Active: From the Level Select, choose your desired stage and start it with Debug Mode active (by having played the 02, 04, 06, 01 sound sequence).
  3. Collect Rings: In Debug Mode, switch to object placement (press B), select the "Ring" object (press A until you find it), and place at least 50 rings (press C repeatedly).
  4. Transform: Switch back to character control (press B). Collect the rings you placed. Once you have 50 or more, jump and your character will transform into their Super form!

Note: This transformation is permanent for the chosen level, even if you lose rings, as long as you maintain Debug Mode's invincibility.

Lock-On Cartridge Cheats (Sonic 3 & Knuckles)

When Sonic & Knuckles is locked on to Sonic 3, forming the full Sonic 3 & Knuckles experience, the cheat codes are slightly different and often more integrated into the main game's options.

Sound Test & Level Select (Sonic 3 & Knuckles)

  1. Load Game: Start Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
  2. No Save Mode: On the title screen, select "No Save" mode.
