Controls (Sonic)
Mastering Sonic's moveset is crucial for achieving high ranks and uncovering all the secrets in Sonic Rush. This section details every action Sonic can perform, along with strategies for optimal use.
Basic Movement
- D-Pad Left/Right: Move Sonic horizontally. Hold to build speed.
- D-Pad Down: Crouch. Essential for ducking under obstacles and initiating the Spin Dash.
- D-Pad Up: Look up. Useful for scouting the path ahead or identifying hidden routes on the upper screen.
Offensive & Utility Moves
- A Button (Jump): Press to jump. Holding the button will result in a higher jump. Combine with D-Pad for directional jumps.
- B Button (Boost): The core mechanic of Sonic Rush!
- Press to activate a burst of speed, destroying enemies and certain obstacles in your path.
- Consumes a portion of your "Tension Gauge" (located on the bottom screen).
- Strategically use the Boost to maintain momentum, clear gaps, and defeat groups of enemies quickly.
- The Tension Gauge refills by collecting rings, performing tricks, and defeating enemies. Keep an eye on it!
- Y Button (Trick/Air Dash):
- On the Ground: Functions as a quick dash forward, similar to a mini-boost, but without consuming Tension. Useful for small adjustments or quickly clearing minor gaps.
- In the Air: Performs an "Air Dash." This is invaluable for extending jumps, reaching distant platforms, or correcting a misjudged leap. Can be used multiple times in a single jump, depending on timing.
- Spin Dash (D-Pad Down + A Button):
- While crouching (D-Pad Down), press and hold the A Button to charge a Spin Dash.
- Release A to launch Sonic forward at high speed, destroying enemies and breaking through certain barriers.
- The longer you hold A, the more powerful and faster the Spin Dash will be.
- An excellent move for starting stages with momentum or overcoming steep inclines.
- Homing Attack (A Button in Air + A Button again when near enemy):
- Jump towards an enemy, then press the A Button again when the target reticle appears over them.
- Sonic will home in on the enemy, attacking it.
- Can be chained between multiple enemies, allowing for aerial combos and maintaining momentum across gaps.
- Crucial for navigating sections with flying enemies or platforms that require sequential attacks to cross.
Advanced Techniques & Combos
- Boost Chain: Continuously activate the Boost (B Button) as your Tension Gauge refills. This allows for sustained high-speed sections, especially effective in open areas or long corridors.
- Trick Jumps (R Button + D-Pad in Air): While in the air, press the R Button and a direction on the D-Pad to perform a trick.
- Successfully landing a trick jump will significantly refill your Tension Gauge.
- Experiment with different D-Pad directions (Up, Down, Left, Right) for varied trick animations.
- Mastering trick jumps is key to maintaining your Boost and achieving high scores. Look for ramps and springboards to launch Sonic high enough for multiple tricks.
- Wall Jump: Jump towards a vertical wall and press the A Button again as Sonic makes contact. This allows him to kick off the wall and gain additional height, often necessary for reaching higher pathways or secret areas.
- Grinding (Jump onto a Rail): Jump onto any designated grind rail to slide along it at high speed.
- Use the D-Pad Left/Right to shift Sonic's balance on the rail, preventing him from falling off.
- Press A to jump off the rail.
- Often leads to alternative routes or provides a quick way to traverse large sections of a stage.
