Special Stages are unique bonus levels where you can earn Chaos Emeralds, crucial for unlocking Chaos Powers and Super Forms. There are seven Chaos Emeralds, and each is found within its own distinct special stage.

How to Access Special Stages:
- Big Rings: In each act of a zone, there is typically one 'Big Ring' hidden. These are large, glowing rings that, when jumped into, transport you to a special stage.
- Finding Big Rings: Big Rings are often located off the main path, requiring character-specific abilities (Tails' flight, Knuckles' climb/glide, Amy's double jump) or careful exploration to reach. They might be behind destructible walls, at the end of hidden paths, or high above the main route.
Special Stage Gameplay:
The special stages in Sonic Superstars involve a 3D chase sequence where you must catch a giant Chaos Emerald. You'll be running on a spherical or cylindrical track, collecting blue spheres to increase your speed and avoid obstacles. The controls are slightly different:
- Left/Right: Steer your character around the track.
- Jump: Jump over obstacles or gaps.
- Boost: Collect blue spheres to fill a boost meter. Press a button (usually X/Square) to activate a temporary speed boost, essential for catching the Emerald.
Tips for Special Stages:
- Prioritize Blue Spheres: Always aim to collect blue spheres to maintain your boost meter.
- Learn the Layout: Each special stage has a fixed layout. If you fail, try to memorize the obstacle patterns and optimal paths.
- Use Boost Strategically: Save your boost for straightaways or when the Emerald is just out of reach. Don't waste it on turns or immediately after an obstacle.
- Practice: These stages can be challenging. Don't get discouraged if you don't succeed on your first try.
Successfully completing a special stage awards you a Chaos Emerald and a significant medal bonus. Collecting all seven Emeralds is necessary for the true ending and unlocking Super Forms.
