At the start of your adventure, you'll have the option to choose your character. This choice significantly impacts your gameplay experience. Here are your options:
- Sonic the Hedgehog: The fastest thing alive! Sonic is agile and excels at speed-running through levels. His Spin Dash is incredibly powerful for breaking through obstacles and gaining momentum. Playing as Sonic alone offers a pure, unadulterated speed experience.
- Sonic & Tails: This is the default and often recommended option for new players. Tails, the two-tailed fox, follows Sonic and can fly for a short duration by repeatedly pressing the jump button. While Tails can be helpful for reaching higher platforms or recovering from falls, he can also sometimes get in the way or trigger traps. However, his ability to collect rings and defeat enemies independently can be a huge advantage.
- Tails the Fox: While not officially a solo option in the original game's main mode, some versions or hacks allow you to play as Tails alone. Tails is slower than Sonic but his flight ability makes him unique. For the purposes of this guide, we'll primarily focus on Sonic's abilities, with notes on how Tails can assist.
For your first playthrough, we recommend Sonic & Tails to get a feel for the game with a little extra help. Once you're comfortable, try Sonic solo for the ultimate speed challenge.
