Flying Battery Zone
Welcome aboard the Flying Battery Zone, Eggman's airborne fortress! This zone is notorious for its tight corridors, electrical hazards, and numerous traps. Precision platforming and quick reflexes are key to navigating these metallic skies.
Act 1
You'll begin Act 1 on the exterior of the airship. Immediately after the start, you'll encounter your first set of rotating platforms. Time your jumps carefully to avoid falling into the abyss below. Look for a Ring Monitor shortly after the first set of platforms.
- Electrical Barriers: Many pathways are blocked by pulsating electrical barriers. These cycle on and off. Wait for them to dissipate before attempting to pass. A well-timed Spin Dash can often get you through quickly once the path is clear.
- Crushing Walls: Keep an eye out for pistons and crushing walls. These require precise timing to pass without taking damage. Often, there's a small alcove or a brief pause in their movement that allows you to slip by.
- Gravity Switches: You'll encounter sections where you can flip gravity switches, allowing you to walk on the ceiling. Use these to access higher platforms or bypass obstacles. Remember to flip them back if you need to return to normal gravity.
- Item Location: After the first major gravity switch section, look for a hidden path above the main route that leads to an Invincibility Monitor. This can be incredibly useful for clearing a path through tougher enemy clusters.
- Mid-Boss: The mid-boss for Act 1 is a large, rotating robot with extending arms. It will try to push you off the platform. Focus on hitting its core when its arms are retracted. A few well-placed Spin Dashes or jump attacks will defeat it.
Act 2
Act 2 takes you deeper into the Flying Battery's interior, introducing more complex machinery and environmental hazards.
- Conveyor Belts: Be mindful of conveyor belts that can either speed you up or slow you down. Use them to your advantage for momentum or to carefully navigate tight spots. Some even move items, so watch for Ring Monitors or Shield Monitors being carried past.
- Flame Traps: Certain pipes will periodically spew flames. Observe their pattern and pass through when the flames recede. A Fire Shield (found in a monitor shortly after the first flame trap section) can protect you from a single hit, but it's still best to avoid them.
- Laser Grids: You'll encounter rooms with moving laser grids. These are deadly on contact. The key is to find the safe gaps and move through them quickly. Sometimes, you'll need to utilize a nearby spring or dash panel to get past them before they close.
- Hidden 1-Up: In a section with multiple vertical shafts and moving platforms, look for a small, easily missed opening on the left side, about halfway up. This leads to a secret area containing a 1-Up Monitor.
- Boss: The final boss of Flying Battery Zone is a large, multi-jointed robot that moves across the screen. It has a weak point on its head. The challenge comes from the constantly moving platforms and the boss's attacks, which include shooting projectiles and trying to ram you. Wait for it to extend its head or lower itself, then jump and attack. Using a Lightning Shield (if you managed to carry one over from a previous act or found one in a hidden monitor) can be beneficial for its double jump ability to reach the boss's head more easily.
