Act 2 of Hydrocity Zone ramps up the difficulty with more complex underwater mazes, faster currents, and a greater emphasis on timing and precision. You'll encounter more enemies and environmental puzzles that require quick thinking.
Key Features & Hazards:
- Water Slides: Long, sloped sections that propel you at high speeds through water. Be ready to jump at the end to avoid hazards.
- Crushing Walls: Walls that move together, threatening to crush you. Time your movements carefully to pass through.
- Underwater Springs: These can launch you to higher platforms or out of the water entirely.
Strategy:
Utilize the Spin Dash to navigate the underwater sections quickly and efficiently. The Aqua Shield remains invaluable for Sonic. Tails' flight can bypass many of the challenging underwater segments, allowing him to reach higher platforms and secret areas. Pay close attention to the patterns of crushing walls and rotating platforms. There are many hidden ring caches and 1-Ups in this act, often found by exploring vertical paths or by using springs to reach elevated areas. The boss of this zone is Dr. Robotnik in a specialized underwater vehicle.
Boss: Egg Mobile (Hydrocity)
Dr. Robotnik's Hydrocity boss is a large, spinning machine that creates powerful whirlpools. He will drop into the water, spin rapidly, and then rise. The whirlpools can pull you in, making it difficult to attack. The key is to attack him when he is rising out of the water or just before he drops. Use the Spin Dash to gain speed and jump into him. Be careful not to get caught in the whirlpool, as it can push you into the spikes on the arena floor. Seven to eight hits will defeat him. After this, you'll move on to Marble Garden Zone.
