In addition to Special Stages, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features Bonus Stages that provide extra rings, lives, and powerful shields. These stages are accessed by passing a Star Post with 50 or more rings. There are two types of Bonus Stages:
Gumball Machine Bonus Stage:
- Access: Hit a Star Post with 50+ rings.
- Gameplay: You're placed in a giant gumball machine. Jump and hit the flippers to launch yourself around, collecting rings and power-ups. The goal is to collect as many items as possible before time runs out or you fall out.
- Rewards: Rings, 1-Up monitors, and various elemental shields (Flame, Aqua, Lightning).
Slot Machine Bonus Stage:
- Access: Hit a Star Post with 50+ rings.
- Gameplay: You're in a room with a giant slot machine. Jump to hit the lever and try to match three symbols for big rewards.
- Rewards: Large amounts of rings, 1-Up monitors.
Tips for Bonus Stages:
- Gumball: Focus on hitting the flippers strategically to reach higher platforms and collect more items.
- Slot Machine: There's no real 'skill' involved, but it's a good way to rack up rings and lives.
These Bonus Stages are an excellent way to stock up on lives and shields, which can be incredibly helpful in later, more challenging zones. Always try to hit Star Posts with at least 50 rings to maximize your chances of entering these stages.
