Werehog's Critical Attacks

As the powerful Werehog, Sonic gains access to a unique combat system focused on strength and combos. While regular attacks are effective, mastering Critical Attacks is key to maximizing damage output, especially against tougher enemies and bosses. These special moves are often triggered by specific conditions or button sequences, rewarding observant and skilled players.

Understanding Critical Attack Triggers

Critical Attacks aren't always available; they typically rely on one of two primary conditions:

  • Enemy Stun/Vulnerability: Many enemies, particularly larger Dark Gaia creatures, will enter a stunned or vulnerable state after taking a certain amount of damage or after a specific attack. This is your cue to unleash a Critical Attack.
  • Contextual Prompts: In some situations, especially during boss fights or against specific environmental hazards, a button prompt will appear on screen. Successfully executing this prompt will trigger a powerful Critical Attack or a quick-time event (QTE) that deals significant damage.

Executing Critical Attacks

1. The "Finishing Blow" Critical

This is the most common type of Critical Attack, activated when an enemy is sufficiently weakened or stunned. Look for visual cues such as an enemy staggering, glowing, or having a visible "dizzy" animation.

  • Activation: Once an enemy is vulnerable, approach them and press the designated attack button (typically the same button used for regular attacks, but the animation will change).
  • Effectiveness: This attack deals massive damage and often finishes off standard enemies in a single hit. Against larger foes, it can deplete a significant portion of their health bar or break through their defenses.
  • Strategy: Focus on building up your combo meter with regular attacks and Unleashed Mode to quickly bring enemies to a vulnerable state. Once they're stunned, don't hesitate – go for the Finishing Blow immediately.
2. Grab-Initiated Criticals

The Werehog's ability to grab enemies opens up unique critical opportunities, particularly against smaller to medium-sized Dark Gaia creatures.

  • Activation:
    1. First, grab an enemy using the designated grab button (refer to the "Grabbing with the Werehog" section for controls).
    2. Once grabbed, you'll often have a brief window to perform a follow-up action. Look for a prompt to press an attack button.
  • Specific Examples:
    • Throw Critical: After grabbing a smaller enemy, pressing the attack button might cause Werehog to violently slam or throw the enemy, often damaging other nearby foes as well.
    • Spin Critical: Against certain enemies, a grab might lead to a spin animation where Werehog rotates the enemy before launching them. This is particularly effective for crowd control.
  • Strategy: Grabbing and performing these criticals is excellent for dealing with groups of weaker enemies, as the thrown or spun enemy can damage others upon impact. It also provides a brief moment of invulnerability during the animation.
3. Environmental Criticals / QTEs

These are less frequent but incredibly impactful, often appearing during boss battles or specific level segments.

  • Activation: A large, clear button prompt will flash on screen during a specific moment in gameplay. This could be after dodging a boss attack, breaking a part of their armor, or interacting with a stage element.
  • Execution: Press the indicated button precisely when it appears. Missing the prompt usually results in taking damage or losing a critical opportunity.
  • Examples:
    • During the battle against the Dark Gaia Phoenix, successfully stunning it might lead to a QTE where Werehog latches on and delivers a series of powerful blows.
    • In certain stages, breaking a structural weakness might trigger a QTE to bring down a platform on enemies.
  • Strategy: Always be prepared for these prompts, especially during boss encounters. They are often the key to quickly defeating powerful adversaries. Keep your eyes on the center of the screen for the button icon.

Maximizing Critical Attack Potential

  • Unleashed Mode: Activating Unleashed Mode (by filling your Unleashed Gauge) significantly boosts Werehog's attack power and speed, making it easier to stun enemies and set up Critical Attacks.
  • Combat Upgrades: Invest your collected Experience Points (EXP) into Werehog's combat stats, particularly "Power" and "Combo Damage," to make your Critical Attacks even more devastating.
  • Observation is Key: Pay close attention to enemy animations and visual cues. Knowing when an enemy is vulnerable is crucial for landing those high-damage Criticals.

By integrating these Critical Attacks into your combat repertoire, you'll find Werehog's nighttime stages much more manageable and immensely satisfying!
