Game Mechanics

Mastering Spyro's core abilities and understanding the world's interactive elements is crucial for collecting every gem, orb, and talisman in Avalar. This section details Spyro's moveset, environmental interactions, and how to effectively navigate the challenges Ripto throws your way.

Spyro's Core Abilities

Spyro boasts a versatile set of moves that will be your primary tools for exploration and combat. Practice these until they become second nature:

  • Flame Attack: Your most basic offensive move. Press the Square button to unleash a short-range burst of fire. Effective against smaller enemies, frozen objects, and igniting certain mechanisms.
  • Charge Attack: Press and hold the Circle button to initiate a powerful charge. This is your go-to for breaking open metal chests, defeating armored enemies, and traversing long distances quickly. Be mindful of enemies with spikes or those that are immune to charging.
  • Glide: After jumping with X, press and hold X again mid-air to glide. This allows you to cross large gaps and reach elevated platforms. Combine with a jump from a high point for maximum distance.
  • Hover: At the very end of a glide, press Triangle to perform a short hover. This provides a small vertical boost, perfect for reaching ledges that are just out of glide range or correcting a slightly misjudged landing.
  • Headbash: Jump with X, then press Triangle mid-air to perform a downward headbash. This move is essential for breaking open cracked ground, activating pressure plates, and defeating enemies vulnerable from above.
  • Swimming: In water, use the Analog Stick to move. Press X to dive deeper and Square to propel forward. Some areas require underwater exploration to find hidden gems or pathways.

Environmental Interactions & Collectibles

Avalar is brimming with items to collect and objects to interact with. Knowing what to look for and how to engage with it is key to 100% completion.

Gems

Gems are the primary currency in Spyro 2. They come in various denominations and are scattered throughout every level. You'll need them to pay Moneybags for new abilities and to open portals to new worlds.

  • Red Gems: Worth 1 gem.
  • Green Gems: Worth 2 gems.
  • Blue Gems: Worth 5 gems.
  • Yellow Gems: Worth 10 gems.
  • Purple Gems: Worth 25 gems.
  • Gem Vases/Baskets: Break these with a Flame or Charge attack to reveal multiple gems.
  • Metal Chests: Require a Charge attack to open. Often contain higher value gems.
  • Strong Chests: These larger, more durable chests require a specific power-up (usually Superflame or Supercharge) to open. Their locations are often clues to nearby power-up gates.
  • Thief Chests: Small, fast-moving enemies that drop a large number of gems when defeated. They often require a well-timed Charge or Flame attack to catch.

Orbs

Orbs are awarded for completing specific challenges or quests given by NPCs within each world. These are vital for progressing through the game and unlocking new areas. Always speak to every NPC you encounter to uncover potential orb challenges.

  • Challenge Orbs: Awarded for tasks like escorting characters, winning races, or solving puzzles.
  • Hidden Orbs: Some orbs are cleverly hidden and require keen observation or specific abilities to reach.

Talismans

Each homeworld has a specific number of Talismans to collect. These are typically awarded after completing all the main objectives in a world's levels and defeating its boss. Collecting all Talismans is essential for unlocking the final confrontation with Ripto.

Power-Up Gates

Throughout Avalar, you'll find glowing archways that grant temporary power-ups. These are crucial for accessing new areas, defeating specific enemies, or opening Strong Chests.

  • Superflame: Grants an infinitely powerful and long-range flame attack. Essential for breaking Strong Chests and defeating tougher enemies.
  • Supercharge: Boosts Spyro's charge speed and power, allowing him to break through reinforced walls and reach distant platforms.
  • Superflight: Grants unlimited flight for a short duration, allowing access to high-up areas and hidden platforms.
  • Invincibility: Makes Spyro immune to all damage for a limited time. Useful for traversing hazardous areas or taking down powerful foes.
  • Spring Jump: Allows Spyro to jump significantly higher than normal, reaching previously inaccessible ledges.

To activate a power-up gate, simply walk through it. The effect is temporary, so plan your actions carefully to maximize its utility.
