Multiplayer

SSX 3 offers a fantastic multiplayer experience, allowing you to challenge your friends in various events across the entire mountain. Whether you're looking for head-to-head races, trick battles, or a more casual free-ride session, the multiplayer mode delivers hours of competitive fun.

Setting Up a Multiplayer Game

Getting into a multiplayer session is straightforward. Follow these steps from the main menu:

  1. From the main menu, select "Multiplayer".
  2. Choose your desired event type:
    • Race: Compete to be the first down the mountain.
    • Freestyle: Focus on racking up the highest trick score.
    • Freeride: Explore the mountain together without competitive objectives.
  3. Select the number of players (up to two players on a single console).
  4. Each player will then choose their character and board. Remember that character stats and board upgrades carry over from your single-player progress, so a well-equipped character will have an advantage.
  5. Finally, select the specific course or area you wish to play on. All courses unlocked in single-player are available in multiplayer.

Multiplayer Event Strategies

Race Events

In multiplayer races, the stakes are higher as you're directly competing against a friend. Here are some strategies to secure victory:

  • Boost Management: Unlike single-player where you might save boost for specific sections, in multiplayer, aggressive boost usage can be key. Use boost strategically on straightaways and after landing big tricks to pull ahead.
  • Line Selection: Pay close attention to your opponent's line. If they take an inside line, consider an outside line with more boost opportunities or vice versa. Sometimes, a slightly longer but faster line is better than a direct but slower one.
  • Aggressive Riding: Don't be afraid to bump and jostle for position. While not always effective, a well-timed bump can throw your opponent off their line or even cause a wipeout.
  • Shortcut Exploitation: Master the various shortcuts on each course. Knowing when and how to access these can shave crucial seconds off your time. For example, on Happiness, the shortcut through the abandoned mine shaft can be a game-changer if executed perfectly.

Freestyle Events

Freestyle events are all about style and big scores. Coordination and knowing your opponent's capabilities are crucial.

  • Big Air Opportunities: Identify the largest jumps and half-pipes on the course. These are your primary sources for high-scoring tricks. On Peak 3's Metro-City area, the massive jump over the train tracks is a prime spot for multi-flip, multi-grab combos.
  • Combo Chains: Focus on chaining together multiple tricks. Landing a Uber Trick followed by a few smaller grabs and spins before touching down will yield significantly more points than individual tricks.
  • Grind Combos: Integrate grinding into your trick lines. Long grinds on rails and ledges, especially those that transition into jumps, can extend your combo multiplier. The long rail section on Peak 2's Style Mile is excellent for this.
  • Uber Trick Mastery: Practice your favorite Uber Tricks. Knowing which ones are easy to land and which offer the highest multipliers will give you an edge. Characters like Elise and Mac are excellent choices for their diverse Uber Trick sets.

Freeride Sessions

Freeride is less about competition and more about exploration and shared fun. It's an excellent way to:

  • Discover Hidden Areas: Explore parts of the mountain you might have missed in single-player. Many collectibles and secret paths are easier to find with a friend.
  • Practice Tricks: Use Freeride to perfect new trick combos or master difficult Uber Tricks without the pressure of a timer or score.
  • Friendly Challenges: While not formally scored, you can create your own mini-challenges, like who can find the highest jump or who can land the longest grind.

Advanced Multiplayer Tips

  • Character Selection: While personal preference plays a role, consider character strengths. For races, characters with high speed and stability like Allegra or Psymon might be preferred. For freestyle, characters with good air control and trick stats like Kaori or Moby are excellent.
  • Board Upgrades: Ensure your chosen board has the best available upgrades for the event type. A fully upgraded Freestyle Board with enhanced spin and grab stats will outperform a basic one in trick events. Similarly, a Race Board with maximum speed and edge control is crucial for competitive racing.
  • Communication: If playing locally, communicate with your opponent. This can range from friendly banter to strategic calls, adding another layer of fun to the experience.
