Scoring System Explained
Mastering the scoring system in SSX Tricky is crucial for dominating both Showoff events and maximizing your boost in Race mode. While racing prioritizes speed, a consistent understanding of trick scoring will keep your boost meter full and your competitors in your dust. Showoff, naturally, demands a deep dive into every scoring mechanic to achieve those coveted high scores.
Trick Multipliers: The Core of High Scores
The fundamental principle of scoring revolves around multipliers. Every trick you perform has a base point value, but the real magic happens when you chain tricks together and land them successfully. The longer your trick chain, the higher your multiplier becomes. This is where the "Tricky" aspect of the game truly shines.
- Grabs: Holding a grab button (L1/R1 or L2/R2 on PlayStation, L/R on GameCube/Xbox) while airborne is the simplest trick. Different grabs have varying base points. The longer you hold a grab, the more points it accumulates.
- Flips and Spins: Combining grabs with directional inputs (left/right for spins, up/down for flips) dramatically increases your trick value. A 360-degree spin is good, but a 720 or even a 1080 will net significantly more points.
- Uber Tricks: These are your bread and butter for massive scores and filling your boost meter. Once your boost meter is full, you can perform an Uber Trick by holding down two grab buttons simultaneously (e.g., L1+R1). Successfully landing an Uber Trick will grant you a "Tricky" bonus, which is a significant multiplier. Chaining multiple Uber Tricks in a single jump is the fastest way to rack up points.
- Tricky Bonus: This is the holy grail of scoring. Achieving "Tricky" status (by landing Uber Tricks) significantly multiplies all subsequent trick points until your boost meter depletes or you crash. Maintain Tricky status as long as possible!
Environmental Scoring Opportunities
The courses themselves are packed with elements designed for scoring. Don't just race through them; interact with them!
- Grinding Rails: Look for rails, ledges, and even some snow fences that you can grind. Approach them with speed and jump onto them. Grinding builds your boost and adds to your trick chain. Different grind types (nosegrind, tailgrind, board slide) can also offer slight point variations.
- Pipes and Half-Pipes: These are prime locations for aerial tricks. Use the lips of pipes to launch yourself high into the air, giving you ample time to execute complex trick combinations and multiple Uber Tricks. The longer you stay in the air, the more tricks you can string together.
- Big Air Jumps: Every course features massive jumps. These are your primary opportunities for performing multiple Uber Tricks in a single sequence. On courses like Mesablanca, the massive canyon jumps are ideal for this. On Tokyo Megaplex, the launch ramps before the huge drops are perfect.
- Hidden Areas and Shortcuts: Many shortcuts, often indicated by red and blue signs, also feature unique jumps or grind opportunities that can be integrated into your scoring strategy. For example, the hidden path on Aloha Ice Jam through the ice caves often has good air time.
Strategic Scoring for Maximum Impact
It's not just about doing tricks; it's about doing them intelligently.
- Conserve Boost for Uber Tricks: In Race mode, use smaller tricks to build your boost, then unleash Uber Tricks to gain "Tricky" status and maintain your speed advantage. In Showoff, always aim for Uber Tricks.
- Land Cleanly: A botched landing will reset your trick chain and cost you valuable points and boost. Always try to land with your board parallel to the ground.
- Combine Trick Types: Don't just do spins. Mix in grabs, flips, and then Uber Tricks for maximum points. A 720 Grab + Flip + Uber Trick will score far higher than just a 720.
- Utilize Rewind (if applicable): If you mess up a landing or a trick chain, don't be afraid to use the Rewind feature (if playing on a version that supports it, like some emulators or specific console versions). This allows you to correct mistakes without losing your progress.
- Character Choice: Different characters have different trick stats and unique Uber Tricks. Experiment to find a character whose trick repertoire suits your style and maximizes your scoring potential. For instance, Mac's "Funky Monkey" is a classic for a reason.
