Boost Management
Mastering boost management is the cornerstone of success in SSX Tricky, especially in Race mode. While Showoff mode encourages flashy tricks for high scores, racing demands a more strategic approach to your boost meter. The goal isn't just to fill it, but to use it efficiently to maintain maximum speed and shave precious seconds off your race times. Think of your boost as a finite resource that needs constant replenishment and judicious expenditure.
Generating Boost
Your boost meter is your lifeline to victory. Keeping it full and ready is paramount. Here's how to effectively generate boost:
- Tricks: The most obvious way to build boost is by performing tricks. However, in Race mode, you want to prioritize quick, low-commitment tricks that don't sacrifice speed or put you at risk of bailing.
- Grab Tricks: Simple grabs like a Mute Grab or Indy Grab are excellent for quick boost generation off small jumps or even flat ground if you time it right. Hold the grab button for a moment to maximize the boost gained.
- Spin Tricks: Short spins (180s or 360s) off small ramps or bumps can also provide a decent boost without significant airtime.
- Uber Tricks: While tempting, performing full Uber Tricks in a race is generally discouraged unless you have a massive jump and a clear lead. The time commitment and risk of bailing often outweigh the boost reward. Save these for Showoff or when you're absolutely certain you won't lose momentum.
- Grinding Rails: Grinding is an incredibly efficient way to build boost while maintaining speed. Look for rails on every course.
- Course-Specific Rails: On courses like Tokyo Megaplex, the numerous grind rails in the initial sections and throughout the city are prime boost-generating opportunities. On Garibaldi, the long lodge railings are perfect for this.
- Connecting Grinds: Try to chain multiple grinds together for continuous boost generation.
- Airtime: Simply getting air contributes to your boost meter, especially if you're performing a trick. The longer you're airborne, the more potential boost you can generate.
Strategic Boost Usage
Having a full boost meter is great, but knowing when and where to deploy it is what separates the champions from the also-rans.
- Maintaining Speed: The primary use of boost in Race mode is to maintain top speed, especially on flat sections or slight inclines where gravity isn't doing all the work for you. Tap the boost button intermittently rather than holding it down constantly to conserve your meter.
- Exiting Turns: A well-timed boost out of a tight corner can give you a significant advantage. As you exit a turn, hit the boost to accelerate quickly and pull away from opponents.
- Catching Air: Use a burst of boost just before hitting a jump or ramp to gain extra height and distance. This allows for more elaborate tricks and potentially access to higher-up shortcuts.
- Shortcut Access: Many shortcuts in SSX Tricky require a burst of speed or extra air to reach.
- Mesablanca Shortcut: The famous "sixth shortcut" on Mesablanca often requires a well-timed boost to clear the gap and land successfully. Look for the red and blue signs indicating its entrance.
- Aloha Ice Jam Shortcut: The elevated pathways and ramps on Aloha Ice Jam can be reached more consistently with a little boost to get the necessary height.
- Recovering from Bails: If you wipe out, a quick boost immediately after recovering can help you regain lost momentum and get back into the race faster.
- Overtaking Opponents: When you need to pass a rival, a sustained boost can give you the burst of speed needed to pull ahead. Be mindful of your boost meter, though; don't drain it completely if you're unsure you'll clear them.
Advanced Boost Tactics
- Crouching for Speed: Remember that your rider goes faster while crouched. Combine this with strategic boosting for maximum velocity. Keep your character crouched as much as possible, even if it slightly impacts turning, and use boost to capitalize on this increased base speed.
- Learning Course Layouts: Intimately knowing each course is crucial. Identify areas where boost is essential (long flats, uphill sections, shortcut entrances) and areas where you can conserve it (steep downhill sections, areas with plenty of trick opportunities).
- Boost Meter Management: Think of your boost meter as a gas tank. You want to keep it as full as possible without letting it overflow, and you want to use it in short, controlled bursts rather than long, sustained drains. Constantly perform small tricks and grinds to keep it topped off.
By integrating these boost management strategies into your gameplay, you'll find yourself consistently placing higher in races and dominating the slopes of SSX Tricky.
