Companion Management and Orders
Navigating the Zone is a perilous undertaking, and having reliable allies can mean the difference between survival and becoming another mutant's meal. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl offers a robust companion system, allowing you to recruit and direct fellow Stalkers to aid you in your endeavors. Mastering companion management is crucial for tackling tougher areas and completing complex objectives.
Recruiting Companions
Companions can be found throughout the Zone, often in settlements like the Cordon Rookie Camp or the Bar. They typically have a distinct dialogue option indicating their willingness to join you. Factors influencing their decision include your reputation, the current threat level, and sometimes, whether you've completed a specific quest for them or their faction.
- Initial Encounter: Look for Stalkers with a "?" icon above their heads when you approach them.
- Reputation Matters: High standing with factions like Duty or Freedom can unlock more experienced and loyal companions.
- Quest Rewards: Certain side quests may offer a unique companion as a reward. Keep an eye on your PDA for these opportunities.
Issuing Orders
Once a companion joins you, a dedicated companion wheel or command menu will become accessible. This allows you to issue specific orders to manage their combat effectiveness and positioning.
- Combat Stance:
- Aggressive: Your companion will actively engage any hostiles within their line of sight. Useful for overwhelming enemies.
- Defensive: They will only attack if you are under direct fire or if enemies are extremely close. Good for conserving ammo and avoiding unnecessary conflict.
- Hold Position: Your companion will remain stationary at their current location, providing covering fire if needed but not advancing. Excellent for setting up ambushes or defending a key point.
- Movement Orders:
- Follow Me: The standard order, keeping your companion close.
- Go To: Designate a specific point on the map or in the environment for them to move to. This is invaluable for flanking maneuvers or securing advantageous positions.
- Stay Here: Similar to "Hold Position" but more focused on preventing them from moving at all, even under fire.
- Looting: You can often direct companions to loot fallen enemies or containers, saving you time and risk. However, be aware that they may prioritize certain items.
Gear and Inventory Management
Companions have their own inventory slots, though they are often more limited than yours. You can equip them with weapons, armor, and ammunition.
- Weapon Upgrades: Providing better firearms and sufficient ammunition is paramount. A companion with a worn-out Makarov will be far less effective than one armed with an upgraded AKM-74/2.
- Armor: Equipping them with decent body armor, such as a basic Stalker suit or even a more advanced Exoskeleton if you can find one, will significantly increase their survivability.
- Ammunition: Always ensure your companions have ample ammunition for their equipped weapons. They will consume it as they fight.
- Healing Items: While they can use some basic medical supplies, it's often more efficient to heal them yourself using your own medkits or bandages.
Companion Perks and Loyalty
As you adventure with companions, their loyalty and effectiveness can increase. Completing missions with them, saving their lives, and sharing loot can foster a stronger bond. This may unlock unique dialogue, special abilities, or even passive buffs when they are with you.
- Trust is Earned: Consistently performing well in combat and making smart tactical decisions will build their trust.
- Betrayal: Conversely, making poor decisions that lead to their death, or acting against their faction's interests, can lead to them abandoning you or even turning hostile.
Strategic Deployment
Think of your companions as extensions of your own combat capabilities. Use them to:
- Flank Enemies: Send them around to the side while you engage from the front.
- Draw Fire: Position them to attract enemy attention while you reposition or set up an ambush.
- Secure Areas: Have them hold a choke point while you clear another.
- Scout Ahead: In less dangerous areas, you can have them move slightly ahead to spot threats.
By effectively managing your companions, you'll find the harsh realities of the Zone become significantly more manageable, turning potential liabilities into invaluable assets.
