Like lightsaber components, these are purely cosmetic and do not offer any gameplay advantages. However, finding them is a fun incentive for exploration and adds to the overall immersion. You can change Cal's poncho at any Meditation Circle and BD-1's skin at the customization bench on the Mantis.
