Skill Point Breakdown by Class
Understanding how skill points are allocated based on your chosen class is fundamental to effective character building in Knights of the Old Republic. Each class receives a different number of skill points per level, influencing how broadly or deeply you can develop your character's non-combat abilities.
The three starting classes—Soldier, Scout, and Scoundrel—each have a distinct skill point progression. This progression is also influenced by your character's Intelligence attribute; higher Intelligence grants more skill points per level, regardless of class.
Soldiers receive the fewest skill points per level. This class is desed for direct combat, prioritizing Strength and Constitution over Intelligence and skills. As such, Soldiers typically focus on a few key skills that directly support their combat role, such as Treat Injury for self-healing or Awareness for spotting traps and hidden enemies.
Scouts receive a moderate amount of skill points per level. This class offers a balance between combat capability and utility. Scouts can afford to invest in a few more skills than Soldiers, allowing for a more versatile character. They might develop skills like Computer Use or Stealth in addition to Treat Injury and Awareness.
Scoundrels receive the most skill points per level. This class is built around skills, stealth, and precision. Scoundrels excel in areas like Computer Use, Demolitions, Stealth, and Persuade. Their high skill point allocation allows them to become masters of non-combat solutions and infiltration.
Jedi Classes (Guardian, Sentinel, Consular) gain skill points based on their base class progression before multiclassing. Once you become a Jedi, your skill point progression generally slows down compared to a pure Scoundrel, but you gain access to Force powers and combat forms.
Skill Point Allocation Summary:
| Class | Skill Points per Level (Base) | Primary Focus | Recommended Skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soldier | Low | Combat | Treat Injury, Awareness |
| Scout | Medium | Balanced | Treat Injury, Awareness, Computer Use, Stealth |
| Scoundrel | High | Skills, Stealth | Computer Use, Demolitions, Stealth, Persuade, Repair |
Important Considerations:
- Intelligence: Always consider your Intelligence score. A base Intelligence of 14 or 16 will sificantly boost your skill point gains, making any class more versatile.
- Companion Skills: Remember that your companions can cover many skill needs. T3-M4 is excellent with Computer Use and Repair, while HK-47 can be useful for Demolitions.
- Focus: It's better to be proficient in a few key skills than mediocre in many. Choose skills that al with your character's role and the challenges you expect to face.
By understanding these differences, you can make informed decisions during character creation and level-ups to build a character that excels in their chosen role.
