Character Development & Progression — Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Guide

Master KOTOR character progression. Learn about gaining XP, leveling up, allocating attributes, choosing feats, and investing in skills for your Jedi.

Shape your destiny in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic through strategic character development and progression. As you gain experience, you'll level up, earning attribute points, feat choices, and skill advancements that define your character's capabilities and role in the galaxy.

Gaining Experience Points (XP)

Experience is the currency of progression in KOTOR. You earn XP primarily through:

  • Completing Quests: Both main story quests and side missions offer sificant XP rewards.
  • Defeating Enemies: Combat encounters grant XP, with tougher enemies yielding more.
  • Using Skills: Successfully using skills like Computer Use or Demolitions can sometimes award small amounts of XP.
  • Discovering New Areas: Exploring uncharted territories can also grant XP.

Leveling Up: The Core of Progression

When you accumulate enough XP, your character levels up. Each level-up grants you:

  • Attribute Points: You gain a set number of points (typically 2) to distribute among your six core attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma).
  • Feat Points: You gain a feat point to spend on unlocking new feats or improving existing ones.
  • Skill Points: You gain skill points to invest in your character's various skills (e.g., Computer Use, Demolitions, Persuade). The number of skill points gained per level is influenced by your Intelligence attribute.

Attribute Allocation Strategy

Your attribute choices are critical and should al with your chosen class and playstyle:

  • Jedi Guardians: Prioritize Strength for melee damage and Constitution for survivability.
  • Jedi Sentinels: Benefit from a balanced approach, investing in Strength/Dexterity for combat and Wisdom/Charisma for Force powers and dialogue.
  • Jedi Consulars: Focus heavily on Wisdom for Force power effectiveness and Charisma for dialogue and Force power attack bonuses. Intelligence is also useful for gaining more skill points.

Remember that attribute scores have diminishing returns, so spreading points too thinly can be less effective than focusing on key attributes.

Feat Selection

Feats provide specialized abilities and bonuses. Choose feats that complement your class and attribute focus. For example, a melee-focused character might take feats like Power Attack or Flurry, while a Force-user would invest in Force Power or Force Speed.

Skill Investment

Skills allow for interaction with the environment and can open up alternative solutions to problems.

  • Computer Use: Essential for hacking terminals, disabling security systems, and accessing valuable information.
  • Demolitions: Improves the effectiveness of grenades and mines.
  • Persuade: Crucial for influencing dialogue outcomes and avoiding combat.
  • Repair: Useful for droid companions.

Consider which skills best suit your character's role. A high-Intelligence character will gain more skill points, allowing for broader specialization.

Alment and its Impact

Your choices throughout the game influence your alment (Light Side or Dark Side). While not directly tied to leveling, your alment affects available Force powers, dialogue options, and the game's ending. Some powerful Force powers are exclusive to either the Light or Dark Side.
