Force Powers
Mastering the Force is central to your journey in Knights of the Old Republic. This section will guide you through understanding, acquiring, and effectively utilizing Force Powers, whether you walk the path of the Light or embrace the Dark Side.
Understanding Force Alignment
Your alignment on the Light/Dark Side spectrum significantly impacts the effectiveness and Force Point cost of certain powers. Powers aligned with your current standing will cost less Force Points, while opposing powers will be more expensive. For example, a Light Side character using Dark Side powers will pay a premium in Force Points, and vice-versa. Plan your character's progression accordingly.
Acquiring Force Powers
You will begin to unlock Force Powers once your character becomes a Jedi. This pivotal moment occurs on Taris, after completing the main storyline quests there and escaping the planet. Upon reaching the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, you will undergo your Jedi training and gain access to your first Force Powers. Subsequent powers are acquired by spending skill points during level-ups, much like feats and skills.
Recommended Force Powers for All Builds
Regardless of your chosen alignment or combat style, some Force Powers offer universal utility and are highly recommended for any Jedi or Sith Lord.
- Force Heal (Light Side) / Cure (Universal): Essential for survivability. Force Heal is a Light Side power that restores a significant amount of Vitality to the user and nearby allies. Cure is a universal variant that heals less but removes status effects. Prioritize at least one of these early on.
- Force Speed (Universal): A cornerstone power. Force Speed grants increased defense, attack bonuses, and allows you to move faster in combat. The higher tiers (Burst of Speed, Master Speed) are invaluable for closing distances, escaping danger, and maximizing your combat rounds.
- Energy Resistance (Universal): Provides damage reduction against energy attacks. As you encounter more advanced enemies with blaster weapons and Force abilities, this power becomes increasingly vital.
- Stun/Stasis Field (Universal): Crowd control is key. Stun and its upgrades (Stasis, Stasis Field) allow you to incapacitate multiple enemies, giving you precious time to deal with threats or reposition.
Light Side Force Powers: The Path of the Protector
Light Side powers focus on healing, protection, and disabling enemies without lethal force. They are ideal for characters who wish to support their party and control the battlefield.
- Force Valor (Light Side): Boosts all attributes for your entire party. Master Valor is an incredibly powerful buff, especially before tough encounters.
- Force Barrier (Light Side): Increases your party's defense rating, making them harder to hit.
- Force Immunity (Light Side): Grants temporary immunity to various debilitating effects. Useful against enemies that rely on stunning or fear.
- Destroy Droid (Light Side): While seemingly aggressive, this power is highly effective against the numerous droids you'll encounter throughout the galaxy. Its Light Side nature means it won't penalize your alignment.
Dark Side Force Powers: Embrace the Power
Dark Side powers emphasize offensive capabilities, debilitating enemies, and direct damage. They are perfect for players who want to unleash devastating Force attacks and dominate their foes.
- Force Lightning (Dark Side): A classic Sith ability. Deals significant electrical damage to a single target, with subsequent upgrades (Lightning, Storm) allowing it to chain to multiple enemies.
- Force Drain (Dark Side): Drains Vitality from an enemy and transfers it to you, simultaneously damaging them and healing yourself. Master Drain is excellent for sustained combat.
- Fear/Horror/Insanity (Dark Side): Inflicts fear and panic on enemies, causing them to flee or become stunned. Insanity can incapacitate entire groups.
- Death Field (Dark Side): A potent area-of-effect power that deals massive damage to all nearby enemies. The ultimate expression of Dark Side destructive power.
Strategic Power Usage
- Conserve Force Points: Early in the game, your Force Point pool will be limited. Use powers strategically. Don't spam high-cost abilities unless absolutely necessary.
- Force Restoration: You can restore Force Points by using Force Potency items (found as loot or purchased from vendors like Ithorak Guldar on Taris, or Jorak Uln on Dantooine) or by resting.
- Synergy with Companions: Your companions also have abilities. Coordinate your Force Powers with their attacks and support skills for maximum effectiveness. For example, use a Stasis Field to hold enemies while Carth Onasi or Canderous Ordo unleash ranged attacks.
- Pre-Buffing: Before engaging in a difficult fight, use your beneficial Force Powers like Force Speed, Force Valor, or Energy Resistance. These buffs often last for a decent duration and can turn the tide of battle.
- Target Priority: Use crowd control powers on dangerous melee attackers or Force-sensitive enemies first. Focus your damage-dealing powers on high-priority targets like enemy leaders or turrets.
By understanding these principles and carefully selecting your Force Powers, you will become an unstoppable force in the galaxy, shaping its destiny with every decision.
