Introduction

Welcome, Padawan, to the definitive guide for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic! Whether you're a seasoned veteran of the Old Republic or a fresh recruit stepping into the shoes of a burgeoning hero, this guide will illuminate your path through the galaxy's most perilous challenges. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive, actionable walkthrough that ensures you experience every nuance of this classic RPG, from the bustling streets of Taris to the ancient mysteries of the Star Forge.

This introduction will prepare you for the journey ahead, offering crucial initial steps and strategies to lay a strong foundation for your character and your adventure. Pay close attention to the details, as even the smallest choices in Knights of the Old Republic can have far-reaching consequences.

Character Creation: Your First Steps

Upon starting a new game, you'll be thrust into the character creation screen. This is a critical juncture, as your initial choices will define your character's strengths and weaknesses for a significant portion of the game. While you will eventually gain access to Jedi classes, your starting class is vital for surviving the early game.

  • Class Selection: Choose wisely from the three base classes:
    • Scout: A balanced class with good combat skills and access to some useful feats like Flurry and Rapid Shot. They also gain the Implant Level 1 feat for free, allowing early access to powerful cybernetic upgrades.
    • Soldier: The combat specialist. Soldiers excel with weapons and armor, gaining the most feats and vitality points per level. Ideal for players who want to focus on direct combat.
    • Scoundrel: A stealth and skill-focused class. Scoundrels gain Sneak Attack, which deals bonus damage to flanked or stunned enemies, and have more skill points per level. They are squishier in direct combat but can be devastating with proper tactical play.
  • Attributes: Allocate your attribute points carefully. A good general spread for most builds involves prioritizing Strength (for melee) or Dexterity (for ranged/defense), Constitution (for health and Fortitude saves), and Wisdom/Charisma (for future Force powers). Avoid dumping any attribute too low, as it can severely hinder your character.
  • Skills: Focus on a few key skills. For your main character, we highly recommend investing in Repair (to fix droids and gain XP), Computer Use (to hack terminals and disable defenses), and Persuade (to unlock dialogue options and avoid combat). Other useful skills include Treat Injury (for healing efficiency) and Demolitions (for mine disarming/setting).
  • Feats: Your starting feats should complement your chosen class and combat style. For Soldiers, consider Two-Weapon Fighting or Weapon Specialization. Scoundrels benefit greatly from Conditioning or Toughness. Scouts can leverage their free Implant feat by picking up other combat-oriented feats.

The Endar Spire: Tutorial and Initial Loot

Your adventure begins aboard the Endar Spire, under attack by Sith forces. This initial sequence serves as a tutorial, introducing you to movement, combat, and interaction mechanics. Don't rush through it; explore thoroughly to maximize your early gains.

  1. Meet Carth Onasi: You'll awaken in your bunk. After a brief conversation, Carth Onasi, a Republic soldier, will join your party. He's an excellent ranged combatant and a valuable ally in these early stages.
  2. Secure the Bridge: Follow Carth's instructions. You'll encounter your first few Sith soldiers. Utilize the combat system to defeat them. Remember to pause combat frequently to issue commands and use medpacs.
  3. Loot Everything: This is a golden rule in KOTOR. Every defeated enemy, every footlocker, and every container is a potential source of credits, equipment, and quest items.
    • Footlocker (Your Bunk): Contains a Blaster Pistol and some Medpacs. Equip the blaster immediately.
    • Footlockers (Throughout the Spire): Look for additional Blaster Pistols, Energy Shields, Medpacs, and Frag Grenades.
    • Sith Corpses: Always loot fallen enemies for credits and basic equipment.
  4. Repair Droid (Optional XP): In one of the initial corridors, you'll find a damaged utility droid. If your character has sufficient Repair skill, you can fix it for experience points. This is a small but early boost.
  5. Reach the Escape Pods: Navigate through the burning corridors, fighting off more Sith. You'll eventually reach the escape pod bay. Before entering, ensure you've explored every accessible area for loot and experience. There's no turning back once you enter the escape pod.

By following these initial steps, you'll be well-equipped and prepared for the challenges awaiting you on Taris, the first major planet you'll explore. Good luck, and may the Force be with you!
